The 2048 Offseason wasn't an outlier in terms of players moving teams, but with a CY team, bored GMs, and teams facing Hard Cap issues, PM's were flying this offseason and the Trade thread had one of its most active offseasons ever.
When looking at a lot of deals that were made, most of the intent behind the trade agreements can be regarded as:
- Hard Cap maneuvering
- Trying to win
- Trying to lose
- Bored
I'll cover the HC + Trying to Lose deals since doing all will take a shit-load of time.
Hard Cap Issues
What made this offseason very unique was the fact that so many teams were skimming the hard cap and this category alone could be its own article. Even with an entire offseason over, the Pacers, Grizzlies, Wizards, and Rockets were still faced with the 48 hour countdown to get under the magic number that everyone has memorized by now: $84,000,000. This section will cover all the moves that were made after all the combined hours of number crunching by NBADSL GMs who are wondering why they are doing so much math in their free time.
Magic - Nets
Magic Trade: Peja Stojakovic
Nets Trade: Rashard Lewis + Nick Van Exel
The Magic wasted no time to get a jump on their impending HC violations. While they (we) have a lot of great players on the team, they were also being paid accordingly. Even with Dirk Nowitzki taking under the table benefits to sign hisDirk cheap dirt cheap contracts, annual salary increases shot the team salary to above $90 million. The team was in a tricky situation because a star player HAD to go, and that's what led to an opportunity for the Nets. greeme wasted no time jumping in and grabbing one of the premier shooters in the league, Peja Stojakovic, who continues to live a privileged NBADSL life. As you recall, he went from winning a championship under white supremacist BANNAK, to playing on one of the best outside offenses in Orlando, to playing for outside-offense guru; Mike D'Antoni greeme.
Aftermath: The team worked out well for both sides as Orlando waived NVE's $18 million dollar salary and had enough wiggle room to actually sign an MLE this offseason. Nets unleashed Peja Stojakovic who no longer has to share his 3 point attempts with two top 10 3PAPG players (Damon and Tmac), and while they are 2-4 to start the season, it's not because they made a bad trade in the offseason.
Rockets - Celtics
Rockets Trade: Paul Pierce
+ Calvin Hammond
+ Jet Turtle
Celtics Trade: Caron Butler
+ Rasheed Wallace
+ Eddie Griffin
+ Kendrick Perkins
+ Celtics 51 1st
No surprise this one is on here. As somerandomguy said, "They are fucked." With no waiver powers, 7 players, and <48 hours to get under, the Big 4 Rocket era was already over. And that's when getbeard jumped in for hometown hero and People's 2047 Finals MVP: Paul Pierce.
For the situation that mrclubz was in, this wasn't a bad return, and it certainly improved their odds of getting under $84 mil. The clear winner of all this is definitely the Boston Celtics, who successfully completed their rebuild by trading away youth assets for a superstar Paul Pierce, who is still one of the most unstoppable wing scorers in the league, and just a season removed from carrying the Orlando Magic to a championship. Calvin Hammond is a good role player who is a little out of place in Boston since they need more defense and rebounding as opposed to Calvin's outside shooting potential. Still, he was a nice additional.
Aftermath: This obviously worked out for the Rockets since they got under 84 within 48 hours. They are now 7-5 and local merchandise sales will not suffer because the vinsanity era has officially begun. As for the Celtics, they have a big 3 of Theo Papa, Pierce, and Marcus Camby + great supporting role players. While the Celtics were one of top teams in the East before this trade, they are now one of the favorites to win it all, especially when you take into account Paul Pierce's playoff pedigree. They had a rough start to the season with injuries to Pierce and Camby, but they just need a few sims to get their DC working. Should their slow start last for longer than expected, some top 4 team in the East will be very unhappy to see this team in the 1st round of the playoffs. That team will probably be the Orlando Magic I'm guessing.
Rockets - 76ers
Rockets Trade: Rasheed
Wallace + Eddie Griffin + Kendrick Perkins
Sixers Trade: Vin Baker
+ Ernest Brown
+ Josh Childress
+ Nick Collison
Part 2 of the Rocket's HC restructure happened quickly after fucking over the Atlantic Division teams. The 76ers get two young role players in Eddie Griffin and Kendrick Perkins. Plus, with the Atlantic division so loaded, this helps them tank and hopefully grab a star to play alonside these young players. Even if they don't plan on keeping these guys, walker44688 increased his team's trade value with some more valuable pieces. This serves as good news for contenders who want to unload their assets for more winning pieces. Once again the Rockets lose out in value and talent.. but they didn't have a choice. Since people were not bitching in the trade threads too much, so you gotta assume that deals like this were all they had available to them.
While Vin Baker isn't Paul Pierce, and his trade value isn't even close to the former, the Rockets maintain a competitive lineup with Jason Kidd, Chris Webber, Vince Carter, and a resurgent Baker. Caron Butler and that soft bench won't win them any championships, but this is a great first step towards retooling their team. They did what they had to do, so you gotta commend them on that.
Aftermath: For Houston, this brought them under $85.5 mil, and with Ernesto Brown waived off, they are back in business. Okay, so I guess NOW I can say that Vinsanity has started. The Sixers are successfully tanking and shopping around the new pieces. Win-win for both sides
Freemium
The next bucket of trades that I will cover involve the deals that happened because one team wanted to dump talent and lose, while the other GM jumped on a great opportunity. It's never good to give away good winning players for free, so you have to charge a premium for giving them away. Let's evaluate the results:
Wizards - Bulls
Wizards Trade: Gilbert Arenas
+ Lafrentz Raef
+ Paul Millsap
+ Sofoklis
+ wiz 50 1st
+ wiz 51 1st
Bulls Trade: Lamar Odom + MLE
aar paid street price for once and made use of his massive collection of assets to land Lamar Odom, and simultaneously educate the league on the importance of reading draft notes. While those 1st picks probably won't be worth much, Lafrentz, Arenas, Millsap, and Sofo each fit at least 2 of these 3 labels: star, potential star, or good asset. Maybe not Lafrentz, but he's still pretty solid. bloop probably won't be able to keep all the players he got in this deal, but he still got a pretty great haul for Lamar Odom, and you can almost argue that they have more overall trade value now. Gilbert Arenas is on a great contract, and Bulls can easily flip some of these new players for another star if that's the direction they want to go in.
With Lamar Odom at point guard, the Wizards continue their reign of playing terrifying point guards as they have moved from Eddy Terrell, to Larry Hughes, to Theodoras Papaloukas, to Allen Iverson, to Lamar Odom. Broken-ness aside, Lamar Odom is the perfect player for aar's inside team. He can defend, pass, rebound, and score efficiently from range and inside the paint. LO is worth the price of admission, and now everyone else will have to pay the price.
Aftermath: Bulls are.. 10-3 and the best team in the East after their offseason of dumping star talent. Gilbert replaces Odom's scoring output at the price of doubling LO's TOs. They have depth, and should finish this season comfortably in the playoffs barring a major collapse. While it's unlikely they'll remain #1, this team will definitely not be as bad as last season. JJ, Melo, Arenas, Lafrentz + the army of shot blockers and rebounders gives the Bulls one of the elite outside shooting teams in the league. Great start for Gilbert Arenas' second stint on the Bulls in NBADSL. Ironically, Arenas went from the Wizards to the Bulls over 40 seasons ago as well. The Wizards are obviously stacked at all 5 positions and perfectly set up for inside offense. They still have a lot of depth, and Lamar Odom is a young franchise cornerstone to build upon. Expect many more seasons of #1 seeds from the Wizards.
Pacers - Hawks
Pacers Trade: Glen Rice + Charlie Villaneuva + Pacers 2049 1st + Pacers 2050
Hawks Trade: Antonio McDyess + Travis Outlaw + Brent Barry
After McDyess got the hell out of Detroit, he took the first big contract he could get his hands on after a career of being underpaid. After all those seasons of losing in Utah and Detroit, McDyess probably didn't care that he was going to a team that was committed to finishing with the worst record in the league. There comes a point in a man's life that he just doesn't give a shit anymore and has to feed his family. The Hawks get a nice return for the price of essentially, cap space. They get two first picks from a Pacers team that looks very good, but any team in the East has the potential to have their 1st pick go mid-round due to the strength of competition. When Glen Rice's salary comes off the books, Atlanta has room for another max next offseason. Great use of cap space for a rebuilding team.
The Pacers meanwhile add a star/superstar caliber veteran player for a good price. Their roster is built to win now, and it helps that their core veterans are all on great value contracts so they will be out of HC issues for at least two seasons. McDyess can pass, block, and carry your team's scoring. What's not to love about this move for them?
Aftermath: The Hawks need to change up their lineup to play their best players btw. But aside from that, they are 4-6 and would seemingly drop lower in the standings as the season goes on. The Bucks, Nets, and Celtics will most likely recover from their slow starts, and this Hawks team is scoring 86.3PPG. The Pacers are 5-3 although they haven't played against many elite teams. Stephon Marbury will be out for two more sims, making this a rough start for them. Even still, a +10 win margin + great numbers from their star players is very promising for tyfreak to see, and this team will contend for the ECF.
Wizards - Nuggets
Wizards Trade: Bob McAdoo + $200
Nuggets Trade: Tony Battie
Magic - Bulls
Magic Trade: $500 + Brian Cook + Tyronne HIll
Bulls Trade: Theo Ratliff
Posted these two minor deals as prime examples of freemium trades. Cash for a stud post defender + rebounder like Theo is a bargain, and likewise for Tony Battie. I'm actually surprised more people didn't jump on these players when they were on waivers, or try to trade for them with expirings.
