FBB has various ways to deal with age. Some players can stay in the league until they're 40 while others retire at 33 after a MVP caliber season. Some players stay great until they leave while others decline so quickly they end up being highly overpaid. Who are the best veterans (35+) in the league right now ? Clearly, it's not a great time for super old players.
CONSIDERATIONS
A.C. Green (Toronto Raptors/36)
Ratings : C+ D+ F C B+
Stats : 4.6ppg, 4.3rpg, .419 FG% - 12.8mpg
Green was a mere roleplayer his all career, and he played only 53 minutes in the last three season before he got to the Raptors. But he's been really useful this year in .500 Toronto, where he grabs a huge number of rebounds (12.1rpg on a 36min basis).
Arvydas Sabonis (Memphis Grizzlies/37)
Ratings : C+ B+ C B- C+
Stats : 3.9ppg, 2.7rpg, .388 FG%, .538 3P% - 9.1mpg
Sabonis is at the very end of his career and he's far from dominating. He's still a good scorer (15.4ppg on a 36min basis) and his three point shot is deadly as always (7-13 in 25 games), but he can't really have an impact anymore.
Sam Bowie (Minnesota Timberwolves/35)
Ratings : C+ C F+ C+ B-
Stats : 3.2ppg, 3.1rpg, .383 FG% - 10.4mpg
Did you know that Bowie had 7 straight seasons over 30mpg and 10 over 25mpg ? That he had 10 straight seasons over 10ppg and five double double seasons ? Time flies. Bowie can still grab some rebounds though (10.7rpg on a 36min basis).
Tookie Brown (Phoenix Suns/35)
Ratings : D B B- C+ F+
Stats : 3.6ppg, 2.2apg, .387 FG%, .323 3P% - 14.0mpg
Brown's career was a huge surprise but the party's over. He can't score anymore, even from long range, or pass, or defend. And he's maybe the worst rebounder in the league.
TOP TEN
10. Isaiah Jasey (Cleveland Cavaliers/36)
Ratings : B C- D+ B- B-
Stats : 4.8ppg, 5.5rpg, 1.0bpg, .447 FG% - 16.9mpg
Jasey always had better stats than his ratings said. It's especially the case on the defensive end of the floor, and he's still a nice shotblocker (2.1bpg on a 36min basis). Rebounding is nice (11.7rpg on a 36min basis) and he can score a bit. And he's a valuable piece in one of the best teams in the East.
9. Rod Strickland (Chicago Bulls/35)
Ratings : C B A- A- C-
Stats : 4.5ppg, 3.7apg, .460 FG%, .500 3P% - 15.0mpg
Strickland is just the opposite. His ratings always were great, and still are : A- handles and A- defense at age 35 is huge. He's still a great shooter (19-38 from three point range) but really not a scorer (10.8ppg on a 36min basis). He's still a good passer (8.9apg on a 36min basis) but loses two many balls (3.8topg on a 36min basis).
8. Clyde Drexler (Cleveland Cavaliers/35)
Ratings : B- B C A- C
Stats : 6.2ppg, 2.8rpg, 1.0apg, .491 FG%, .371 3P% - 16.7mpg
Drexler has terrific ratings since he came back from retirement. Defense is his main quality, because he's not that much of a scorer (13.4ppg on a 36min basis) anymore, despite good percentages. Another nice number is rebounds (6.0rpg on a 36min basis). A valuable roleplayer in a very good team.
7. Ty Hudson (Cleveland Cavaliers/37)
Ratings : C B A- C- F+
Stats : 7.0ppg, 3.0apg, .467 FG%, .322 3P% - 13.9mpg
When it comes to offense, Hudson does not seem to age. His scoring (18.1ppg on a 36min basis) and passing (7.8apg on a 36min basis) are really great for a 37 year old player, and his assists/turnovers ratio (3.8) is still terrific. Of course, he can't defend at all and challenges Tookie for the worst rebounder award, but he's still valuable to a competing team.
6. Zhou Qi (Boston Celtics/38)
Ratings : B A- D+ C+ C
Stats : 7.4ppg, 3.6rpg, .469 FG%, .600 3P% - 16.2mpg
Zhou Qi will be great for eternity. B A- offensive ratings for a 38 years old really big (7'3'') man ? Come on ! Scoring is still here (16.4ppg on a 36min basis) and his percentages are just unbelievable : he made 30 of 50 three points attempts this season ! He can still rebound (8.0rpg on a 36min basis) despite a C rating and block some shots. No wonder he was offered $10M on 2 years in the last free agency.
5. Joe Dumars (Denver Nuggets/36)
Ratings : C B B+ B C-
Stats : 10.8ppg, 4.2rpg, 3.7apg, 1.9spg, .425 FG%, .363 3P% - 31.1mpg
Dumars is the player over 35 who gets the most playing time, and to play 31.1mpg at age 36 is a great performance. But it's with the 8-47 Nuggets, and he's not having a huge offensive impact : scoring is low and percentages are bad. But he's still terrific in steals (2.2spg on a 36min basis) and brings a lot of different things to the table.
4. Dean Garrett (Dallas Mavericks/35)
Ratings : C+ C- C- B B+
Stats : 4.8ppg, 10.7rpg, 2.0bpg, .342 FG% - 30.6mpg
Garrett is 35 but it's his fourth straight season over 30mpg. He's mainly a terrific rebounder (12.6rpg on a 36min basis) but he also blocks a lot of shots (2.4bpg on a 36min basis). The issue, of course, is that he's completely useless on offense. He shoots rarely and his percentage is still awful. Nice on the free throw line (.784 FT%) though.
3. Jalek Felton (Philadelphia 76ers/36)
Ratings : B+ B C C C-
Stats : 10.5ppg, 3.5rpg, 1.4apg, .438 FG%, .314 3P% - 21.4mpg
A few years ago, Felton was the best scorer in the league, a terrific scoring machine who had four straight years over 30ppg. He's not that player anymore, but he was still worth 21.4ppg last year, at age 35 ! He's now only a backup, but he still scores (17.7ppg on a 36min basis).
2. Jong-Hyun Lee (Los Angeles Clippers/35)
Ratings : C+ C- D+ B+ B-
Stats : 5.7ppg, 6.2rpg, 2.5bpg, .416 FG% - 22.2mpg
Lee was named to the All-Defensive six times in a row and even won the DPoY award back in 2039. Almost 10 years later, he's still a terrific defender - and that's all. He can't score (9.2ppg on a 36min basis), even in the 8-49 Clippers, and does not rebound a lot (10.1rpg on a 36min basis). But he still blocks everything (4.1bpg on a 36min basis) !
1. Hakeem Olajuwon (Detroit Pistons/36)
Ratings : B+ D+ D- B+ B
Stats : 11.9ppg, 9.8rpg, 2.4bpg, .476 FG% - 30.5mpg
Olajuwon is the only real quality starter over 35 in this league. He's still worth a double double, even without being an option, although he has some issues with the very face outside Pistons offense. But his percentage is great and his defense is still elite. The Dream is not finished !
