The 2046 Draft was an interesting one. There was no sure-fire top pick and the top-5 picks probably could have gone in any particular order.
With these players all having their first training camps, lets see how the players selected in the lottery panned out.
1. Hornets: Chris Bosh PF 6'10'' 210 19
Pre-TC Ratings: B C D+ C+ C A
Post-TC Ratings: B C D+ B- B- C (+1 defense +2 rebounding)
Summer League Stats: Chris Bosh PF 16 31.6 14.3 7.9 2.6 1.3 1.0 1.4 .479 .684 .000
With the Hornets rigging the draft in their favor, they needed a big performance in TC from Chris Bosh.
Bosh delivered by improving in two essential big man categories, stepping up his defense, but more importantly going from a potential long-term rebounding liability to likely being able to hang with the big boys.
Bosh went up two notches in rebounding which is remarkably hard to do when you start with a C rating.
Judging by his summer league performance, it looks like Bosh will inevitably be a very well-rounded big man who does a bit of everything.
2. Spurs: Amare Stoudamire PF 6'10'' 245 20
Pre-TC Ratings: B C- C- C C A
Post-TC Ratings: Amare Stoudamire PF 20 6'10'' 245 B C- C- C+ C A (+1 defense)
Summer League Stats: Amare Stoudamire PF 14 41.0 15.6 10.0 2.1 1.4 1.4 1.6 .467 .696 .000
The Spurs also went big with their second overall pick and unfortunately, Amare failed to deliver.
Going up in only a single category, Amare still has a long way to go.
In summer league, Stoudamire performed well despite being surrounded with some pretty good talent.
With some camps and better TC luck, Stoudamire and Gasol will be a nice frontcourt for the future and if not, Super will overpay for Amare because he is Jewish.
Grade: C+
3. 76ers: Tony Parker PG 6'2'' 180 20
Pre-TC Ratings: B- C C+ C+ D+ A
Post-TC Ratings: Tony Parker PG 20 6'2'' 180 B- C B- B D+ B (+1 handles, +2 defense)
Summer League Stats: Tony Parker PG 15 39.1 18.0 5.3 6.4 2.2 0.1 4.0 .451 .673 .385
It's hard not to be enamored with Parker if you are a team with an inside oriented offense.
Parker had a solid TC, improving in important PG areas and also had a good summer league minus his suspect handles.
With some improvements, Parker will join the ranks of Pee Wee Kirkland and Milos Obradovic as the new breed of inside-oriented point guards.
Grade: A-
4. Celtics: Boris Diaw SF 6'8'' 201 21
Pre-TC Ratings: C+ C B- B C A
Post-TC Ratings: B- C+ B+ B+ C B (+1 inside, +1 outside, +2 handles, +1 defense)
Summer League Stats (at PG): Boris Diaw PG 14 31.9 14.6 6.1 7.1 1.3 0.4 2.3 .497 .727 .500
So far, Diaw is the clear steal of the draft.
He had great notes, is incredibly versatile and already has incredible ratings.
Diaw is the clear point guard of the future in Boston, although it should be noted that his defense drops to C+ at the position.
The Celtics have a great stable of youth.
Grade: A+
5. Wizards: Dean Bentley SF 6'10'' 198 21
Pre-TC Ratings: C C+ C+ B- B- A
Post-TC Ratings: Dean Bentley SF 21 6'10'' 198 C C+ B- B- B- A (+1 handles)
Summer League Stats: Dean Bentley SF 11 41.3 5.3 9.2 3.2 2.5 1.0 1.5 .379 .684 .250
My initial response to Bentley's summer league was "what a weirdo"! This is the case given his strange attributes.
Bentley definitely had a poor TC and as a result, his progression is a bit stunted. That said, his summer league performance shows that he is able to do a lot of things.
Bentley is definitely a massive work in progress.
Grade: D
6. Mavericks: Chris Kaman C 7'0'' 255 21
Pre-TC Ratings: B- C- D C+ C+ B
Post-TC Ratings: B- C- D B- B- C (+1 defense +1 rebounding)
Summer League Stats: Chris Kaman C 14 35.9 11.4 9.8 1.6 0.6 0.9 3.3 .412 .667 .000
Kaman is an anomaly here as he had a good TC, but a pretty poor summer league performance.
Kaman went up in two valuable categories and has a lot of room for growth, but has gotten a good start in the areas that matter.
Big prospects are tough to come by historically, but as long as the Mavs put some work in, they'll be able to turn him into a good starter.
Grade: C+
7. Hornets: Jaxon Stevens SG 6'8'' 205 25
Pre-TC Ratings: B+ C+ D+ C D+ B
Post-TC Ratings: A- B- C- C D+ A (+1 inside, +1 outside, +1 handles)
Summer League Stats: Jaxon Stevens SG 16 37.4 29.3 4.3 2.8 0.9 0.4 2.0 .524 .763 .275
The Hornets have to have mixed feelings about this one. They should be overcome with joy about how good this kid is, but should also be a bit bummed that a) he is 25 and b) they probably will have issues tanking as hard as they did last season
If those two things don't bother them, they have a heck of a prospect here.
Jaxon looks like an offensive juggernaut who can do everything on that end of the floor.
Grade: A
8. Kings: Trevor Ariza SF 6'8'' 200 19
Pre-TC Ratings: C+ C+ D+ B- C+ A
Post-TC Ratings: B- C+ C- B C+ B (+1 inside, +1 handles, +1 defense)
Summer League Stats: Trevor Ariza SF 12 40.2 15.6 8.4 2.3 1.7 0.3 2.3 .484 .596 .318
Ariza looks like a keeper long-term.
He is young and versatile with a lot of promise.
I don't think that the Kings expect much of him early on, but he definitely looks like someone who will be a very good starter in the long term.
He had a really solid summer league and hopefully those are the sort of numbers he ends up putting up.
Grade: B
9. Warriors: Zarko Cabarkapa PF 6'11'' 220 19
Pre-TC Ratings: C+ C+ C+ B- C A
Post-TC Ratings: Zarko Cabarkapa PF 19 6'11'' 220 C+ C+ B- B- C A (+1 handles)
Summer League Stats: Zarko Cabarkapa PF 10 41.3 17.9 7.3 3.9 1.0 0.2 2.4 .447 .833 .304
I hate to say it, but Zarko looks like a bit of a dud.
He improved only his handles, still can't rebound with a lick and can't block shots.
That said, his ratings are high enough everywhere that one good TC and some camps can make him into a B B- B B C C type player, which is what I imagine the Warriors were hoping for.
Grade: D
10. Blazers: David West PF 6'8'' 232 21
Pre-TC Ratings: B- C C- C+ C A
Post-TC Ratings: B- C C- C+ C B (no changes)
Summer League Stats: David West PF 17 35.9 19.7 7.4 2.8 1.1 0.3 1.6 .539 .750 .556
No changes, but THOSE PERCENTAGES!
I know that it's summer league, but if he plays to that sort of level, his ratings won't matter.
West is certainly a big time work in progress, but I'd imagine that his numerical ratings tell the story better than his letter grades.
Grade: C
11. Grizzlies: Darko Milicic PF 7'0'' 245 18
Pre-TC Ratings: C D+ C B C+ F
Post-TC Ratings: Darko Milicic PF 18 7'0'' 245 C D+ C B+ C+ D
Summer League Stats: Darko Milicic PF 15 10.8 2.7 2.4 0.8 0.2 0.9 0.3 .457 .750 .000
Darko didn't get much burn, but one thing is for sure, DUDE CAN BLOCK!
If the Grizzlies wanted someone who will be a solid rotation player that gets blocks and carries the load on defense, they got their guy.
I expect that Darko will be what he is right now, a solid defender for the long haul.
Grade: B
12. Wizards: Ken Jacobs SG 6'3'' 185 21 C B+ D+ C D+ B
Ratings/Summer League: N/A
We will see what Ken Jacobs is like when he comes back after his two year Mormon missionary work. His notes were great, but it's likely that he doesn't fit into the Wizards offense if it's anything like it is now.
Grade: N/A
13. Heat: Josh Howard SF 6'6'' 203 22
Pre-TC Ratings: B- C C B- C B
Post-TC Ratings: B- C+ C B- C C (+1 outside)
Summer League Stats: Josh Howard SF 12 40.2 16.2 6.9 4.8 1.3 0.7 2.3 .396 .561 .389
Howard put up some solid stats in summer league. He's a gifted passer for his position and also solid on the boards.
His percentages, however, leave much to be desired, as does his TC.
Likely a rotation player.
Grade: D
