This was kinda fun last year, so here we go for the second unofficial awards.
THE "KEVIN GARNETT" AWARD
Kevin Garnett (6'11'') averaged 6.0apg in 2002-03. This trophy rewards the best passing player whose height is at least 6'11''.
2045 winner : Chris Webber (Los Angeles Clippers)
That's almost ridiculous. Webber is almost averaging five assists a game ! A- handles, only 2.4topg, that's unbelievable for a 6'11'' big man. And his other stats : 27.6ppg, 12.3rpg and 3.3bpg... Duncan and Divac are still among the five best passing bigs, although Duncan numbers dropped compared to last year (4.0apg). The emerging passing big man is Jermaine O'Neal, who had an incredible first season in Boston (20.2ppg, 11.0rpg, 1.2bpg).
Top 5 :
1. Chris Webber (Clippers) 4.9apg
2. Jermaine O'Neal (Celtics) 3.5apg
3. Tim Duncan (Pacers) 3.4apg
4. Vlade Divac (Magic) 3.1apg
5. Zydrunas Ilgauskas (Suns) 2.8apg
THE "TROY MURPHY" AWARD
Troy Murphy (6'11'') shot 45.0% from three point range in 2008-09. This trophy rewards the best three point shooting player whose height is at least 6'11''. Players have to take at least 100 shots from behind the arc to qualify.
2045 winner : Arvydas Sabonis (Phoenix Suns)
Not a lot of shooting bigs in this league. Troy Murphy played 13.4mpg with the Celtics and attempted only 20 three point shots. Dirk Nowitzki played 18.4mpg and 69 games with the Magic. He attempted 79 three point shots and made only 35.4% of them... Two big men had a terrific shooting year though. Sabonis specialized in three point shooting as he shot .443 from the field and an astonishing .491 from behind the arc. He and Qi are very old and the new star in this area is Okur, as expected. The Turkish center is deadly from long range !
Top 5 :
1. Arvydas Sabonis (Suns) .491
2. Mehmet Okur (Hawks) .447
3. Zhou Qi (Pistons) .399
4. Dragan Bender (Hawks) .387
5. Jonathan Bender (Jazz) .387
THE "HAKEEM OLAJUWON" AWARD
Hakeem Olajuwon (7'0'') averaged 2.6spg in 1988-89. This trophy rewards the best stealing player whose height is at least 6'11''.
2045 winner : Dean Garrett (Miami Heat)
This award sucks. No big man in NBADSL is able to but big stealing numbers. Anyway, the award goes to veteran roleplayer Dean Garrett, who had a great defensive year (11.5rpg, 2.6bpg, 1.4spg).
Top 5 :
1. Dean Garrett (Heat) 1.4spg
2. Patrick Ewing (Raptors) 1.2spg
3. Marcus Camby (Jazz) 1.2spg
4. Kevin Garnett (Wolves) 1.1spg
5. Filiberto Martinez (Sonics) 1.1spg
THE "MICHAEL JORDAN" AWARD
Michael Jordan (6'6'') averaged 1.6bpg in 1985-86. This trophy rewards the best shot blocking player whose height is at most 6'6''.
2045 winner : Felipe Lopez (Portland Trail Blazers)
The top 5 for this awards has exatly the same players as last year ! These five guys are really shot blocking specialists, even if they block only 0.5 to 1 shot a game. This year, the award goes to Lopez, who improved his stats when the Blazers played him at small forward. He may be a little undersized, but he sure knows how to jump. By the way, there seems to be a clear link between this award and the participation to the Slam Dunk Contest, where Stackhouse, Carter and Jeter went in the last seasons.
Top 5 :
1. Felipe Lopez (Blazers) 1.0bpg
2. Ron Artest (Grizzlies) 0.9bpg
3. Jerry Stackhouse (Suns) 0.9bpg
4. Vince Carter (Wizards) 0.7bpg
5. Luke Jeter (Nets) 0.6bpg
THE "CHARLES BARKLEY" AWARD
Charles Barkley (6'6'') averaged 14.6rpg in 1986-87. This trophy rewards the best rebounding player whose height is at most 6'6''.
2045 winner : Allen Olsen (Charlotte Hornets)
Wow. 6'6'' shooting guard Allen Olsen grabbed 8.4 rebounds a game this year ! That's, like, A LOT. In fact he was the best rebounder in the Hornets team... And that's while he scored 29.9ppg. He's the only award winner from last year to keep his trophy. Hughes is still second, even if his numbers dropped a little (7.8rpg last year). Richmond and Papaloukas go up one rank, and Baron Davis gets in the top 5, which is very impressive, because he's a point guard and... 6'3''. He wins the very unofficial Fat Lever award !
1. Allen Olsen (Hornets) 8.4rpg
2. Larry Hughes (Bucks) 7.0rpg
3. Mitch Richmond (Clippers) 6.7rpg
4. Theodoros Papaloukas (Wizards) 6.3rpg
5. Baron Davis (Blazers) 6.2rpg
THE "LEBRON JAMES" AWARD
The players between 6'7'' and 6'10'' can't win any of the previous awards, so I had to create one for them. LeBron James (6'8'') averaged 29.7rpg, 8.6apg, 7.3rpg, 1.6spg, 1.0bpg in 2009-10. This trophy rewards the best all around player (points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks) whose height is between 6'7'' and 6'10''.
2045 winner : Paul Pierce (Orlando Magic)
A lot of change in this award top 5. Penny (from #1 to #3) and MVP Eddy (from #5 to #4) are the only two players who survived from last year. Paul Pierce had a tremendous year in Orlando and is now one of the biggest superstars in the league. Benji is maybe the most versatile player in NBADSL, and McDyess is the least paid franchise player out there !
Top 5 :
1. Paul Pierce (Magic) 30.6ppg, 7.5rpg, 3.9apg, 1.5spg, 0.6bpg
2. Benji Wilson (Sonics) 28.4ppg, 7.1rpg, 5.0apg, 1.3spg, 0.8bpg
3. Anfernee Hardaway (Cavaliers) 23.9ppg, 5.2rpg, 11.2apg, 1.8spg, 0.2bpg
4. Eddy Terrell (Heat) 20.9ppg, 6.2rpg, 11.4spg, 1.9spg, 1.6bpg
5. Antonio McDyess (Pistons) 26.1ppg, 9.1rpg, 2.3apg, 1.2spg, 3.0bpg
