I'm bored by my usual articles so I decided to mix stats and fun, and give a few awards based on the 2044 season.
THE "KEVIN GARNETT" AWARD
Kevin Garnett (6'11'') averaged 6.0apg in 2002-03. This trophy rewards the best passing player whose height is at least 6'11''.
2044 winner : Tim Duncan (Indiana Pacers)
Tim Duncan and Chris Webber are the two best passing bigs in the league, they both average a whooping 4.0apg, which would be a lot for any shooting guard. Duncan's passing is amazing cause his handles are C while Webber's handles are B+ and scream "I'm a passing big". Plus he only loses 2.0 balls a game (Webber 2.1topg) and his assists/turnovers ratio (2.0) is better than the one of my starting point guard (Jaquay Walls, 6.0apg 3.5topg). Vlade Divac is third with 3.7apg, he's a classical passing big with B handles, but loses 2.8 balls a game. Derrick Coleman and Vin Baker also bring a lot of assists to their team.
Top 5 :
1. Tim Duncan (Pacers) 4.0apg
2. Chris Webber (Clippers) 4.0apg
3. Vlade Divac (Magic) 3.7apg
4. Derrick Coleman (Lakers) 3.3apg
5. Vin Baker (Blazers) 2.5apg
THE "TROY MURPHY" AWARD
Troy Murphy (6'11'') shot 45.0% from three point range in 2008-09. This trophy rewards the best three point shooting player whose height is at least 6'11''. Players have to take at least 100 shots from behind the arc to qualify.
2044 winner : Zhou Qi (New York Knicks)
There are not that many shooting bigs in the league. 35 years old Zhou Qi is a legend in this area : in his 14 years in NBADSL, he made 1464 shots from three point range with a tremendous .445 3P%. His consistency is incredible : he took more than 150 shots every year and shot below .400 only once. Age had no effect on his shooting as he just had his best shooting season (.496). 20 years old Jonathan Bender and 23 years old Dirk Nowitzki are maybe his heirs, even if Dirk has some trouble shooting for now. Dragan Bender and Vlade Divac are not really shooting bigs, but that's a weapon they can use.
Top 5 :
1. Zhou Qi (Knicks) .496
2. Jonathan Bender (Jazz) .448
3. Dirk Nowitzki (Magic) .417
4. Dragan Bender (Hawks) .410
5. Vlade Divac (Magic) .364
THE "HAKEEM OLAJUWON" AWARD
Hakeem Olajuwon (7'0'') averaged 2.6spg in 1988-89. This trophy rewards the best stealing player whose height is at least 6'11''.
2044 winner : Jonathan Bender (Utah Jazz)
Well there's no Hakeem Olajuwon in this league, even Hakeem Olajuwon. No big man averages more than 1.3spg. Jonathan Bender is the best in this area and he can win this award for years as he has a lot of potential left. It rewards his versatility : 14.1ppg, 8.2rpg, 2.5apg, 1.3spg, 1.2bpg. He's the only stealing specialist above 6'11'' as every other big in the top 5 is a star : Marcus Camby, Kevin Garnett, Arvydas Sabonis, Hakeem Olajuwon. This guys are just too good in every domain, so they get steals, too.
Top 5 :
1. Jonathan Bender (Jazz) 1.3spg
2. Marcus Camby (Bulls) 1.2spg
3. Kevin Garnett (Wolves) 1.2spg
4. Arvydas Sabonis (Suns) 1.1spg
5. Hakeem Olajuwon (Wizards) 1.1spg
THE "MICHAEL JORDAN" AWARD
Michael Jordan (6'6'') averaged 1.6bpg in 1985-86. This trophy rewards the best shot blocking player whose height is at most 6'6''.
2044 winner : Vince Carter (Washington Wizards)
At first I intended to name this award the "Dwyane Wade" award and restrict it to 6'5'' or even 6'4'' players, but no player in NBADSL that short can block shots. So it's the "Michael Jordan" award, and it goes randomly to Vince Carter. Carter and Ron Artest block the same number of shots every night, less than one, and it would be useful to know the exact number as it can go from 70 to 78 blocks in 82 games and still be an average 0.9bpg. Jerry Stackhouse is another capable shot blocker, Felipe Lopez not so much, and Luke Jeter would have won the "Dwyane Wade" award.
Top 5 :
1. Vince Carter (Wizards) 0.9bpg
2. Ron Artest (Grizzlies) 0.9bpg
3. Jerry Stackhouse (Suns) 0.8bpg
4. Felipe Lopez (Blazers) 0.6bpg
5. Luke Jeter (Nets) 0.5bpg
THE "CHARLES BARKLEY" AWARD
Charles Barkley (6'6'') averaged 14.6rpg in 1986-87. This trophy rewards the best rebounding player whose height is at most 6'6''.
2044 winner : Allen Olsen (Charlotte Hornets)
There's no Charles Barkley in the league, and that's an understatement. No player under 6'6'' plays power forward or center, and in FBB it's very unusual that an outside guy gets 10 rebounds a game. The award should really be named the "Fat Lever" award as he was the best outside rebounder in the last 40 years of the real NBA. And there are two outside players who really are tremendous rebounders in NBADSL : Allen Olsen (7.9rpg) and Larry Hughes (7.8rpg). Both play at SG and Hughes is even more impressive as he is only 6'5''. But maybe the most impressive rebounding guard is Jason Kidd who grabs 6.9 rebounds a game while playing the point, and he's also 6'5''. Mitch Richmond and Theodoros Papaloukas also get more than 6rpg, which is a lot.
1. Allen Olsen (Hornets) 7.9rpg
2. Larry Hughes (Wizards) 7.8rpg
3. Jason Kidd (Clippers) 6.9rpg
4. Mitch Richmond (Grizzlies) 6.4rpg
5. Theodoros Papaloukas (Wizards) 6.2rpg
THE "LEBRON JAMES" AWARD
The players between 6'7'' and 6'10'' can't win any of the previous awards, so I had to create one for them. LeBron James (6'8'') averaged 29.7rpg, 8.6apg, 7.3rpg, 1.6spg, 1.0bpg in 2009-10. This trophy rewards the best all around player (points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks) whose height is between 6'7'' and 6'10''.
2044 winner : Anfernee Hardaway (Cleveland Cavaliers)
A lot of great players between 6'7'' and 6'10'', and some very different styles in the top three. There's a an-all around point guard and former MVP, Penny Hardaway. There's a scoring small forward, the best scorer in the league, Len Bias. There's one of the best big man in the league, LaPhonso Ellis. Also in the top five, the surprising Allan Houston, second in scoring and a nice passer ; and the always great Eddy Terrell, who might win this award next year if he starts all season long.
Top 5 :
1. Anfernee Hardaway (Cavaliers) 27.5ppg, 5.3rpg, 10.5apg, 2.4spg, 0.1bpg
2. Len Bias (Celtics) 30.6ppg, 8.7rpg, 2.5apg, 1.4spg, 0.3bpg
3. LaPhonso Ellis (Grizzlies) 22.9ppg, 11.8rpg, 2.7apg, 0.8spg, 3.0bpg
4. Allan Houston (Nuggets) 28.6ppg, 5.0rpg, 3.5apg, 1.9spg, 0.1bpg
5. Eddy Terrell (Heat) 20.1ppg, 6.2rpg, 8.4apg, 1.9spg, 2.2bpg
