In a league such as NBADSL, money means a lot. And getting quality players for less than they deserve is a big step to success. Sometimes, you just have to accept - some players ask for sweet contracts in resignings. Some other times, you have to take a risk and lowball a free agent. If he does not get better offers, or if he's dumb, he may join your team.
Anyway, I wanted to check what the best contracts in the league were. I listed so many of them that I had to made some decisions : no player above 30, no contract shorter than 3 years. No rookie deal of course. The following rankings take into account how good the player is, his age, how much he's paid, the length of the contract. In the end, even I don't agree with the result, but who cares ? Also, I probably forgot a few players.
CONSIDERATIONS
Steve Nash PG 25 6'3" C A A+ B- C- C (Rockets)
Stats : 18.9ppg, 9.7apg, 2.6spg, 4.4topg, .490 FG%, .907 FT%
Salary : $8,367,325 $9,127,991 $9,888,657
Nash is on a really cheap contract. And he's a nice scorer (with tremendous FG% and FT%) and a great passer (10th in the league). He's also terrific in the steals area (3rd). There are two reasons why he's outside the top ten : his man defense (terrible) and the fact that he loses a LOT of balls (worst in the league by far).
Danny Fortson PF 25 6'7" 260 B+ C D C A- C (Jazz)
Stats : 16.3ppg, 9.8rpg, .453 FG%
Salary : $5,673,462 $6,240,808 $6,808,154 $7,375,501
Fortson has one of the cheapest contracts in the league, and like Nash he's only 25. His offensive and rebounding stats are great, but he's a big liability in the defensive area : he can't block a shot, and he can't really stop anyone either.
Calvin Hammond PF 23 6'10" 235 C+ A- C B+ C+ C (Clippers)
Stats : 8.3ppg, 8.7rpg, 2.2apg, 1.5bpg, .438 FG%, .397 3P%
Salary : $4,052,548 $4,457,803 $4,863,058
Hammond was a huge steal in the draft (24th pick) and then he was a huge steal in the free agency as the Clippers resigned him for less than the MLE. Considering his stats, his passing abilities, his defense and his outside shooting (tremendous for a 6'10" player), that's really amazing.
Vin Baker PF 27 6'11" 234 B+ C- C B B- C (Blazers)
Stats : 15.6ppg, 8.7rpg, 2.6apg, 1.6bpg, .435 FG%
Salary : $7,000,000 $7,700,000 $8,470,000
Baker is paid way more than Hammond, but that's still a bargain as he earns about half a max contract. Not too much for an inside scorer who can pass the ball and defend, even if his rebounding numbers are a bit disappointing.
Rodney Rogers SF 29 6'7" 250 B A- C- A- C+ C (Warriors)
Stats : 12.7ppg, 6.5rpg, 2.0bpg, 1.5spg, .420 FG%
Salary : $6,750,000 $6,750,000 $6,750,000
Rogers agent is probably one of the worst in the league, as his player was paid like crap for his whole career. He's a twice All-Defensive Team player who was on a MLE both seasons ! Nice rebounder and OK scorer, better last year in that area (13.4ppg, .458 FG%), but he's mostly a stat defender like Charlie Scott was.
TOP TEN
10. Bryant Reeves C 27 7'1" 280 B+ C C- B B D (Blazers)
Stats : 22.8ppg, 8.9rpg, .479 FG%
Salary : $6,328,125 $7,119,141 $8,009,034
Reeves is a terrific inside scorer, and any 23ppg player who's paid $6M a year is vastly underpaid. Plus He's tall and grabs a good number of rebounds, and he can defend a bit. Really a great bargain for an inside-focused team.
9. Kurt Thomas C 26 6'9" 230 B C- D+ A- A- C (Hornets)
Stats : 13.2ppg, 10.0rpg, 1.2spg, .439 FG%
Salary : $9,075,000 $9,982,500 $10,980,750
8. Cuttino Mobley SG 25 6'4" 190 C A B A- D+ C (Hornets)
Stats : 15.7ppg, 8.6apg, 1.6spg, .488 FG%, .916 FT%, .434 3P%
Salary : $9,607,813 $10,568,594 $11,529,376 $12,490,157 $13,450,938
Cheap 1-5 duo for the Hornets. Thomas is a quality defensive big man who averages a double double, he's pretty good on both sides of the floor even if he can't block a shot. Mobley is a great passer who plays the point in New Orleans, and a terrific shooter (6th in the league in FR%). Considering that the max contract for a 25yo player out of his rookie deal is $13.75M it's safe to say that Mobley is a great bargain.
7. Jakob Poetl C 28 7'0" C+ D D+ A- B+ D (Nets)
Stats : 6.7ppg, 10.5rpg, 2.3bpg, .458 FG%
Salary : $4,750,000 $4,845,000 $4,945,000 $5,040738
Dunno why but I kinda love Poetl. He's a great defender and shotblocker, he gets a lot of rebounds and he never takes a bad shot. A perfect roleplayer, and his salary is the one of the roleplayer, but on four years it's a great deal.
6. Tim Duncan C 25 7'0" 248 A- C- C A- B C (Pacers)
Stats : 23.3ppg, 11.8rpg, 4.2apg, 3.0bpg, .442 FG%
Salary : $11,147,545 $12,160,958 $13,174,372 $14,187,785
Duncan stats are just wow. 23 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 blocks a game ! These are some franchise player stats, no doubt of that. But his salary is quite far from the max he could earn : in the second year of his post rookie contract, he could be paid $15.1M. That $4M saving is pretty sweet, and it's gonna get better : in three years, he will be paid $14.2M instead of $19.3M...
5. Antonio McDyess PF 27 6'9" 220 A- C D+ B C+ C (Pistons)
Stats : 22.7ppg, 7.8rpg, 2.0bpg, .417 FG%
Salary : $6,000,000 $6,600,000 $7,260,000 $7,986,000
Giving $28M to McDyess, a 6.6ppg/3.5rpg/0.4bpg player last year, looked a bit risky when I pulled that trigger in the free agency, but it now seems to be a great deal. McDyess is 27, he can score and block shot. His rebounding numbers are mediocre and he needs a better shot selection, but he has so many camps left that I have no doubt he'll be an even better bargain in a few years.
4. Antonio Daniels SG 24 6'4" 195 B B+ B+ B+ D- B (Jazz)
Stats : 17.3ppg, 7.8apg, 2.0spg, .439 FG%
Salary : $5,292,692 $5,821,961 $6,351,230
Daniels is a great overall player. He's a nice scorer, a nice passer, a nice defender who can gets some steals. He would be great even if he was not paid that little money, and even if he was not 24 with some potential left. And he is. Tremendous deal for the Jazz.
3. Marcus Camby PF 26 7'0" 230 B+ C- C A- B+ C (Bulls)
Stats : 19.2ppg, 12.3rpg, 3.8bpg, .462 FG%
Salary : $10,594,222 $11,557,333 $12,520,444 $13,483,555
Camby is tall, a great rebounder (5th in the league), a great shotblocker (2nd in the league), a fantastic overall defender, has great hands (1.7topg), is deadly from the line (.785 FT%) and can score. A superstar, playing alongside another superstar (Shaq) in a great team, he could have even better stats in another team. Like Duncan, the max salary for his year is $15.1M and he would have deserved every cent of it...
2. Stephon Marbury PG 24 6'3" 190 B- A- B B+ C B (Wolves)
Stats : 27.9ppg, 8.9apg, 6.3rpg, 2.0spg, .486 FG%, .417 3P%
Salary : $8,522,938 $9,297,750 $10,072,563
When they resigned for crazy chep deals, Marbury and Nash almost caused a riot. A few years later, Marbury is clearly the best player of the two : he's a terrific scorer (6th in the league, and check his percentages), a good passer, an impressive rebounder and he has even evolved into a nice defender ! And he's paid $8.5M this year. The max for him being the same as for Duncan/Camby : $15.1M. Almost twice his salary...
1. Len Bias SF 29 6'10" 230 B+ B+ C- A- B- C (Celtics)
Stats : 33.0ppg, 8.8rpg, 1.3apg, .472 FG%, .398 3P%
Salary : $12,000,000 $13,200,000 $14,520,000
A few years ago, Bias contract looked awful. But he got better, and better, and the contract the Celtics gave him last summer looked like a great deal. Then he had the ultimate offensive breakthrough, from B B to B+ B+. He's now one of the best players in the league, the best scorer by far (Houston follows with 29.6ppg), a great rebounder, a nice defender. And his salary ? Well the max for him last summer was $19.3M ! So the best player in the league, or so, is paid only 62% of a max salary...
Anyway, I wanted to check what the best contracts in the league were. I listed so many of them that I had to made some decisions : no player above 30, no contract shorter than 3 years. No rookie deal of course. The following rankings take into account how good the player is, his age, how much he's paid, the length of the contract.
