For a GM to like their team they probably have a cornerstone player that they have tried to build around. This article will go over each teams corner stone player and how that will change how a team builds. Also I will rank some of the top guys to build around in another article coming shortly.
(order is from left to right on top of main page)
Atlanta Hawks- This team has a few guys who could take the title as their cornerstone or franchise player. Due to recent play and accolades I would have to give it up to Klym Artamonov. He is 27 years old so entering his prime for FBB years which is scary because he has already won an MVP and has A handles and A defense with no problems scoring. How the fuck does this guy still have B potential? He may be a freeagent this year but I am sure the hawks will do what it takes to resing him. This team has catered to his needs while building a squad. They have surrounded him with white and European players. When the hawks insulted Kylm by taking PG Steve Francis threatening to take his minutes and not being a white European Klym bullied steve ensuring he has a bad TC and no chance of becoming a star in this league.
Boston Celtics- This team is hard to pick a cornerstone. They have gone through a lot of changes since letting Ray Allen go. The team recently traded Bradley and had a huge FA brining in some very solid players. Deciding between Bias who has finally hit his stride and Payton who is one of the best defensive guards in the league is difficult because both are on good contacts, however Bias scoring 31.6 a game with 9 boards for only 12 million which is half of a superstar contract these days is the bargin boston wants. To build around bias they can go a number of ways, since he sports B+ inside and outside he is not limited to one type of offense.
Brooklyn Nets- A new team which is relatively young has one player that stands out. They traded Tim Duncan away for 21 yer old Kyle Hill last season. He was coming off a very good TC and is locked into his rookie contract for another three years. He is currently scoring 20 points a game with 9 dimes on good percentages so it seems safe that he will be the nets PG for years to come. They need to work on clearing some cap to build around him in FA, adding KAJ did not help that unless he hangs it up. They have a SF in shard and should focus on adding some outside oriented players to push forward.
New Orleans Hornets- Since this is Itnas I would probably say his corner stone and franchise player is Waldo Wares and I say that because he loves to over value random players and than sell short on his good ones. The clear guy here though for the Hornet Fans at least is Alonzo Mourning. He is one of the top PF in the league with a couple good years left, probably at least 5. He currently is putting up 26 12 and 3 which is really good. If Itnas could get a point guard, since idk why Mobley is playing there maybe they could make a push. Will he ever win a ring?
Chicago Bulls- This will be controversial but his franchise player is NOT Shaq. Shaq may be his best player but he came to the team so recent and knowing bloop he is getting a little too old for his liking. If you look at Marcus Camby he has been a Bull since day one. He is one of the top defenders in the league and a only 26 has better days ahead. He is signed on for another four years and will be probably resinging a big contract with Chi town at age 30. The bulls have put a lot of star power around him and it has clearly worked out in their favor.
Clevland Cavaliers- Take a Penny leave a Penny. They took him and have not left him behind once. An early multiple MVP who is now entering his prime is currently averaging 29 and 11 and is probably going to win another MVP since record probably doesn’t matter. He has been on the cavs since he was traded for as a rookie and the cavs have cherished him ever since. They have tried various ways to build around him but due to entrapys retarted trade offers they have not made much progress. One would think Penny and Glenn could carry a team but clearly not.
Dallas Mavericks- This team was lacking direction and a player to build around for some time until they acquired Drazen Petrovic. Since then they have not even considered trading him. He is one of the best pure scorers and also a great defender. His contract is currently getting a little pricey, probably because of his testing FA stip which forces the team to max him pretty much to retain him but he is at least earning his money. Originally one would think to build outside around Drazen but he has emerged as a great all around scorer which allows them to just fill stars around him but the mavs just love to get old players like nance.
Denver Nuggets- Lets just assume the nuggets survive this CY. If they do than they will be selling a lot of Alan Houston jerseys. He is giving it his all and scoring at such an efficient rate of 49% from the floor. He is locked up for a few more seasons into his 30s and has been a Nugget for life. Too bad Joe Johnson sucks or maybe he would be in this conversation.
Detroit Pistons- Before the draft I would not know what to tell you but luckily for Detroit Richard Jefferson has stepped up and truly exploded onto the scene for the pistons.
He is currently the favorite for rookie of the year and seems like a solid well rounded SF to build around. With the Pistons tanking they should be able to add a good player next to him. Adding an explosive SG or a point guard could be very beneficial for the future in Detroit.
Golden State Warriors- Lets just say every Gm has some regrets and mine is trading Robert Traylor. He has continued his production with the warriors and has great base ratings for no fucking reason. In the last year of his rookie contract the Warriors will do what ever it takes to get Traylor to return to the team. He is currently putting up 17 13 and getting 2 blocks which is really good especially since most bigs blossom late. The warriors have a big offseason coming up with Traylor, JO, Stanley, Steve smith all hitting FA it will be exciting to see what they bring in next year.
Houston Rockets- Tmac or Nash? I think I would choose to build around McGrady due to his explosive scoring and ridiculous ratings. Nash has improved over the years but his TO are still concerning. The Rockets have a 22 year old TMAC putting up 25 and lord knows what he will be doing when hes 29 in his prime. The rockets have done a decent job putting talent around the man who once was in question if he would walk again but it has not been enough to make it to the finals, yet.
Indiana Pacers- Although Duncan is killing it and has good ratings and has turned into a boss I know Ty as a gm and he loves his youth, especially home grown players. This is why I am saying his Franchise Player is Gilbert Arenes. He is 19 years old, still a fucking teenager and is lighting up the league as a scorer averaging 16 a game in a back up PG SG role. If given starter minutes he would probably be in running for ROTY. The Pacers have a solid foundation with Gilbert unless he brings a gun into the locker room.
Los Angeles Clippers- This team is on a tear this year and it is because their franchise player has finally exploded. Former #1 pick who looked like a sure bust is now scoring 24 11.8 and 7.8 rebounds. This team has one of the top records in the league and it may finally be the clippers year. I forgot to mention Kidd is also leading the league in steals. He was drafted to this team and if he keeps it up he will retire in LA as well. The Clippers have built well around him with Webber and solid role players who can play good defense all around.
Los Angeles Lakers- This team has gone through some tough years, cited being a team of role players with no chance of success. Blue the gm has done his best to run that around and recently stumbled upon some luck with landing Elton Brand. He is currently not scoring or rebounding at a great rate but it is because he is sharing so much time with others down low. Brand had a great TC and has the skillset moving forward to be the best player in the wrong LA uniform for the next 15 or so years if she plays it right.
Memphis Grizzlies- A few seasons ago my franchise player was dirk, than I said hey its artest and than got Damon who started to kill it and now I drafted wade. Memphis does not know where to to turn or how to build this team around all this young talent. Right now they are looking to build around wade in hopes that the mid range talents of dirk and wade can combine but the DC just is not fitting right. Going forward the young grizzlies will keep trying new things until something clicks, I guess.
Miami Heat- the reason they are in this Cy is because their franchise player did not live up to the hype. Bob McAdoo a life tenured heat player has been a huge disappointment. Mahney Long another high draft pick has had some great years but never when the rest of the team clicked. It seems the heat tanked at the wrong time. Going forward if the heat can make it out of CY their cornerstone is the Pilipino Stud Shaun Cagaoan. When he is not counting pussy he is out there killing it on the inside and boards putting up 15 and 13 in his second year.
Milwaukee Bucks- thank you for making it easy for me heatflash. The franchise player here is clearly Milos who won ROTY for them I think and is currently scoring 21.9 a game for them. In a tanking year the bucks are taking it easy but I would not be surprised to see Milos explode when the bucks want to win in the future. He is a rare inside focus PG but I think he could turn out pretty good if they can build inside around him moving forward.
Minnesota Timberwolves- Kevin Garnett came into the league with out any flaw and currently still is not showing much issue besides his threepoint % but realistically he should not be shooting from deep anyway. At 24 years old the franchise player is locked up into his prime and should continue to progress. If the wolves have any chance at winning a ring it will be because of an MVP season by KG. Marbury isn’t too shabby either though.
Utah Jazz- This wont be a long one. I guess its bender? He is young and pretty decent but is he a PF or SF ? kind of a guy with out a position. Ewing could be it but hes on his last legs. Utah just needs to clear house, clear cap and tank and have a good FA for a new start.
New York Knicks- Nets are no longer trading bc they are now the knicks. And for the first time in a while Lakergm1 has proven to be a competent GM. Happily he took Yao Ming with the first pick and Yao is for sure their cornerstone. He is currently shooting good % with a strong presence in the paint on offense defensive glass. They have put a real solid team around him and one could argue Manu to be their cornerstone but I think after taking Yao 1 overall this past spring it is safe to say he will not be going anywhere soon.
Seattle Supersonics- This team has two guys who are up for nomination in Benji and Kobe however I am going with Benji just because of how long he has been on the team for. SRG has never entertained one offer for Wilson and probably wont until his days are over. He is currently playing very efficient and locked up until he is 32 years old. Seattle has put a lot of talent around Benji over the years and has seen some success but not as much as they would have liked. However if they could get rid of some contracts and land a big FA next to Kobe and Benji it could be game over.
Orlando Magic- It is odd to see Shorty have the same players for so long. Since the conception of this team he has hung onto Richmond and ellis and it will eventually bite him in the ass if he cant flip them for youth since he clearly is not putting the winning pieces necessary around them. However the franchise player is Mitch who has asserted dominant scoring over the years for Shortymannn
Philadelphia 76ers- Under this Gm they have been the definition of mediocre. I have not seen them do much but they do have a franchise player. That player is Grant Hill. He is their Batman with Glenn rice playing Robin. Hill has been on the team for a decent amount of time and has always been a consistent scorer, rebounder and defender. They need to get stronger at pointguard, and both paint positions if they ever want to win more than 43 games in a season.
Phoenix Suns- Out in the desert the man is Jerry Stackhouse. He may lack a little on defense but since his rookie year he has been a lights out scorer from all over the court. Recent additions of Peewee and Sabonis or even recent draft pick Kmart could put up talk for this franchise player spot however Stack is a day one (except for that brief stint with DET) player who the fans have grown to love. The suns last year did what was needed to take their team to the next level and we will see how it goes this year come playoffs.
Portland Trail Blazers- Baron Davis is the one bright spot in the desolate land of Portland. He is young and has swag, hopefully his scoring will come more but he is already a great passer and defender and should
Sacremento Kings- Paul Pierce since he was drafted has clearly been a favorite of the Kings Gm since the day he was drafted. A great scorer with a good mindset on the court. As he grows older it will be interesting to see how many points he can score per contest. I feel that if his defense can get up to a b+ and base can put some young defensive talent around him they could be a scare team in the playoffs led by PP.
San Antonio Spurs- with rumors of a shake up coming in texas I would have to mark recent high draft pick of Pau as the corner stone. He was taken third overall and has the potential to be a 20-10 player if he can muscle up a little in the gym. The spurs need to build around him with a strong center down low and explosive wing players.
Toronto Raptors- When trading for AI and Dee Brown who knew Dee Brown would turn out to be so valuable, besides me of course. However it is clear that AI is the cornerstone in this country. Canadians love him and he loves scoring, with 28.6 ppg AI is killin it out there for the raptors and hopefully saving them in their CY.
Washington Wizards- this team is one of the teams that could have afew choices for this spot. They have Hughes who is sitting on great ratings and scoring 23 game, young gems in carter and marion, and the old sage in Hakeem who won them a ring. But as well all know PAPA is the real cornerstone. A point guard off an MVP year scoring 25 and dishing out 8.8 dimes at a ripe 23 years old. The Wizards don’t need much advise on how to build around Papa and im sure they will do just fine going forward.
