This article will break down the best of the best in the NBADSL at the point guard position.
There are a lot of quality point guards in the league, but which one is the best?
In the first incarnation of this article several seasons ago, the top-5 were:
1) Pee Wee Kirkland
2) Gary Payton
3) Ty Hudson and Eddy Terrell (they were teammates at the time)
4) Isiah Thomas
5) John Stockton
Thomas just retired, Pee Wee just led his team to the conference finals, while Stockton led his team to the finals. Hudson has become essentially a mentor, Terrell is a 6th man again and Payton has had an I impressive career, becoming stagnant on a hapless Nets team.
This list provides a breakdown including what tier each starting point guard falls into (in no particular order):
Tier 1: Sure fire studs/Superstars
Theodoros Papaloukas PG 23 6'6'' 225 B- A- A- B C- B
Eddy Terrell PG 28 6'10'' 222 C+ A- A B- C- C
Klym Artamonov PG 27 6'2'' 179 C+ A- A A D B
Anfernee Hardaway PG 28 6'8'' 210 B+ B+ A- B C- C

Cuttino Mobley SG 25 6'4'' 190 C A- B- A- D+ C
Tier 4: Bench Players/Journeymen
Jessie Boyd PG 23 6'9'' 220 C- A- B- C D+ C
Dee Brown PG 6'1'' 161 30 C+ B B B- C- D
Tyus Edney PG 25 5'10'' 152 C B- A- B- C- C
Jawun Evans PG 33 6'3'' 190 C- C- B+ A- D D
Analysis: The point guard position is incredibly deep in this league. It likely has more sure fire studs than any other position in the league with possibly double the amount in comparison to other positions. The studs at this position are often available for trade, unlike some other positions.
TOP-5 POINT GUARDS IN NBADSL:
This list is based on the following criteria that combines several factors ranked in order of how they are weighted:
1) Current Skills
2) Current Trade Value
3) Value to their team
4) Upside
HONORABLE MENTIONS: Pee Wee Kirkland PG 30 6'1'' 195 B+ B- B+ B+ C- C
2043-44 Stats: 35.4 mpg 20.1 ppg 4.7 rpg 7.1 apg 1.4 spg 0.2 bpg 2.0 topg 46.3 FG% 85.4 FT% 32.2 3P%
Once atop this list, Kirkland at age 30 is now relegated to an honorable mention. Kirkland remains one of the best options at PG for a team running an inside offense. He puts up great scoring numbers every year while limiting his turnovers. He will also get steals and shoots high percentages from anywhere aside from beyond the arc.
Stephon Marbury PG 24 6'3'' 190 B- A- B- B+ C- B
2043-44 Stats: 36.2 mpg 22.0 ppg 4.6 rpg 8.2 apg 1.6 spg 0.2 bpg 2.6 topg 47.1 FG% 84.1 FT% 42.8 3P%
Despite having one of the best hype men as his GM, Marbury doesn't stack up to the absolute elite at the position.
Still, at age 24, he is one of the best outside shooting point guards in the league percentage wise. He is pretty efficient, a solid scorer and has good percentages across the board.
He may not be top-5 on this list, but you could certainly make a case that he should be.
5) Eddy Terrell PG 28 6'10'' 222 C+ A- A B- C- C
2043-44 Stats: 36.6 mpg 12.8 ppg 6.9 rpg 6.3 apg 1.8 spg 2.6 bpg 1.6 topg 43.7 FG% 81.3 FT% 34.3 3P%
A truly enigmatic and strange player as a 6'10" point guard trapped in a power forward's body who can block shots like an animal, Terrell is a complete stats defender and a true anomaly in the league.
A former league MVP, All-Star Game MVP, Playoffs MVP, 6th Man of the Year, All-Defensive and All-League 1st team member, Terrell has racked up a ton of accolades in the league.
At age 28, he is transforming once again and returning to being a 6th man for the Wizards, who had the league's best record last season.
The rare PG who has more blocks per game than turnovers, Terrell has been one of the league's best players for years.
4)Jason Kidd PG 27 6'5'' 215 C A- A A C C
2043-44 Stats: 37.3 mpg 21.9 ppg 6.3 rpg 10.6 apg 2.5 spg 0.1 bpg 3.6 topg 46.4 FG% 81.3 FT% 39.1 3P%
Kidd is coming off of the best season of his career and stands out as one of the best rebounding and defensive point guards in the league.
Despite being 27, it seems Kidd keeps getting better and better.
The Clippers are undergoing a transformational period and it will be interesting to see if he sticks around.
If he doesn't, whoever acquires him will be getting a potential triple double threat each night and a lockdown defender.
3) Klym Artamonov PG 27 6'2'' 179 C+ A- A A D B
2043-44 Stats: 39.1 mpg 22.5 ppg 4.2 rpg 10.0 apg 2.7 spg 0.3 bpg 1.8 topg 44.0 Fg% 76.7 FT% 40.0 3P%
Klym is a damned stud. Deciding where he falls into the PG hierarchy was a tough call, but his poor rebounding puts him behind some of the others.
Klym has led a solid Hawks team for years and has seemingly been their one untouchable. He is a volume scorer and passer while always averaging less than 2 topg. He is as consistent as they come, just give him the keys and let him drive the car.
It will be interesting to see what the Hawks look like if they move Bender.
2) Anfernee Hardaway PG 28 6'8'' 210 B+ B+ A- B C- C
2043-44 Stats: 39.2 mpg 23.3 ppg 5.2 rpg 10.2 apg 2.0 spg 0.1 bpg 2.8 topg 48.8 Fg% 83.0 FT% 35.9 3P%
Penny is already a three time MVP and is a perennial All-League and All-Defensive Team member.
Few point guards possess his well-roundedness and scoring efficiency.
He would have been the top player on this list if he had either won a championship or was a bit younger, but he misses out on the nod despite perhaps being the better player right now.
1) Theodoros Papaloukas PG 23 6'6'' 225 B- A- A- B C- B
2043-44 Stats: 38.8 mpg 22.6 ppg 5.7 rpg 7.5 apg 2.5 spg 0.2 bpg 1.3 topg 46.5 FG% 70.7 FT% 42.9 3P%
Hard to deny Theo the top spot on this list. He is coming off an MVP at age 22 (despite not making an All-League Team for whatever reason), he has also won a championship, all of this during his rookie contract.
He is still not quite as well rounded as some of the players above him, he's not as good a defender and is still unpolished from midrange, but with nearly 39 mpg and only 1.3 topg while scoring nearly 23 ppg, he has already put himself in the conversation as the league's best PG despite just becoming 23.
With all of that in mind, combined with his off the chart trade value, Papa is one of the league's best assets because he's only getting better.
