It's been four seasons since the 2038 rookies entered the league. Where are they now ? Are the best prospect from the draft now superstars ? Who are the busts and who are the steals ? Here's an article about all of them. Spoiler : not a lot of surprises in this draft. Top picks are great, non-lottery picks are useless !
*** THE STARS ***
#1 Tim Duncan C 23 7'0'' 248 B+ C- C A- B D
2042 stats : 17.1ppg, 9.9rpg, 2.0bpg, .451 FG% with the Washington Wizards
Until recently, Duncan would have been considered as a major bust. But that's not the case any more. He's not a superstar yet, but he had a very solid statistical season (17-10-2) in one of the top teams in the league. He can score, rebound, defend and even pass the ball (2.8apg). The potential he has left is unclear, but at $60M/5 years, he's a great deal.
#2 Allen Iverson SG 24 6'0'' 165 B B+ A- B C- C
2042 stats : 22.0ppg, 5.2rpg, 4.8apg, 2.2spg, .435 FG% with the Toronto Raptors
There's a lot to love about AI... and some to dislike. He's a natural scorer, but his percentages (.370 3P%) were not great in a mediocre Raptors team. He can pass, but turn the ball over way too much (3.3topg). He's great on steals, but not a man defender. Every cap team will max him in FA though.
#3 Stephon Marbury PG 22 6'2'' 180 B- A- B- B C- C
2042 stats : 20.1ppg, 8.3apg, 4.9rpg, 1.5spg, .457 FG%, .444 3P% with the Minnesota Timberwolves
Marbury started his NBA career with a bang : 23.3ppg, 8.7apg and a Rookie of the Year award. But that was in a horrible Wolves team, and he was losing 5.0 balls a game ! A lot of GM thought he would not become a star, but they were wrong. His assists/turnovers ratio (3.2) is completely OK now, and he's a great shooter capable of averaging 20ppg in a 53-wins team. Also, he resigned for $36M/4years. Crazy cheap.
#4 Steve Nash PG 23 6'3'' 195 C A A- B- C- B
2042 stats : 17.6ppg, 8.9apg, 4.3rpg, 2.0spg, .480 FG%, .447 3P% with the Houston Rockets
Another crazy cheap player : he resigned for $35M/4 years ! Nash is an incredible shooter, not a top scorer but he can give you almost 20ppg. He's a good passer, but he loses way too many balls (3.5topg). Nice on steals, but a bad defender overall. 4th pick in the draft, and 4th best player in this class... at best.
*** THE ROLEPLAYERS ***
#5 Marcus Camby PF 24 6'11'' 220 B C- C- A B B
2042 stats : 12.6ppg, 10.5rpg, 3.4bpg, .430 FG% with the Chicago Bulls
Camby can score a bit, he can grab some rebounds, but he is mostly a defender... and a terrific one. He blocks a lot of shots (7th in the league), get a good number of steals (1.1spg) for a big man and still does a great job to stop his opponent. A top roleplayer.
#6 Zydrunas Ilgauskas C 23 7'3'' 238 B+ C C- B+ B- C
2042 stats : 13.8ppg, 10.4rpg, 2.2bpg, .408 FG% with the Phoenix Suns
Big Z is one of the best young center in the league. He's tall, gets more than 10 rebounds a game and blocks a lot of shots. He's also a way better offensive player than most of his fellow big men, and he proved it in his third season : 19.2ppg, .427 FG% with the Wizards. Not as great last year in Phoenix, but still.
#7 Peja Stojakovic SF 23 6'9'' 220 C+ A- D B C B
2042 stats : 10.1ppg, 6.1rpg, .476 FG%, .511 3P% with the Atlanta Hawks
Peja is not a great scorer, not a defender either, but he's such a great shooter that he fits in the category "roleplayer" incredibly well. Also, it's only his third season in the league and he has another rookie year left ! Great for the Hawks.
#9 Samaki Walker C 23 6'9'' 258 C+ C- D+ A- A- C
2042 stats : 11.2ppg, 10.9rpg, 2.7bpg, .412 FG% with the Philadelphia 76ers
#14 Erick Dampier C 23 6'11'' 265 C+ D+ D+ B B+ C
2042 stats : 3.9ppg, 6.7rpg, 1.0bpg, .346 FG% with the Philadelpghia 76ers
Walker is a top defensive/rebounding big. But he can score quite well, he's a way better offensive player than Ben Wallace... and Erick Dampier. Dampier is a limited roleplayer who played only 15 games in Philly last year. But he's a great rebounder (6.7rpg in 21.3mpg) and a cheap backup center ($12M/3years).
*** THE STEALS ***
#11 Shareef Abdur-Rahim PF 22 6'9'' 230 B+ C C A- B- B
2042 stats : 12.4ppg, 9.8rpg, 2.8bpg, .407 FG%
Considering the top ten, SAR is not really a steal, but he's a great player to get with a 11th pick. He's not a huge scorer yet, his rebounding numbers are not amazing, but he's a great defender and an overall nice player for a 22 years old. A lot depends on his potential left, but he could become a superstar.
#12 Kerry Kittles PG 23 6'5'' 179 C A- B B+ C- C
2042 stats : 18.3ppg, 7.1apg, 4.8rpg, 1.5spg, .474 FG% with the Boston Celtics
Kittles is quite the opposite. He had an incredible first year (13.7ppg, 7.7apg, 2.2spg, .445 FG%) in Minnesota, then it seemed he had no potential left. Then, his fourth season was terrific : 18-7 while driving the best team in the league, and he's the best outside defender in this class. Also, he resigned for quite cheap ($56M/5years)
#17 Malik Rose PF 24 6'7'' 250 C+ D+ F+ B B- C
2042 stats : 2.4ppg, 3.4rpg, .400 FG% with the Minnesota Timberwolves
#20 Efthimios Rentzias C 25 6'11'' 260 C+ D+ D- B+ B C
2042 stats : 4.4ppg, 5.6rpg, .408 FG% with the Boston Celtics
Any valuable player found outside the lottery is a steal, especially in this draft. Rose and Rentzias are capable defensive roleplayers, mainly Rentzias - he played all 82 games in this great Celtics team. And his stats /36min look nice : 9.3ppg, 11.9rpg, 1.5bpg.
*** THE BUSTS ***
#8 Antoine Walker PF 23 6'9'' 245 B- B C- C B- B
2042 stats : 11.7ppg, 6.2rpg, .465 FG% with the Sacramento Kings
Not a lot of busts in this draft, so I definitely have to put Walker in this category. Walker was so disappointing with the Lakers that he played only 30 minutes in sophomore year ! He had a way bigger role in Sacramento, mainly because he can score a bit, but that's not enough for a player picked in 8th position, before Samaki Walker, SAR and Kittles. Plus he can't defend.
#10 Antawn Jamison SF 23 6'9'' 223 B- C C B B- B
2042 stats : 7.5ppg, 5.1rpg, .460 FG% with the Los Angeles Lakers
Jamison is just a meh player. Not a great scorer, not a great defender, he does not make passes (1.1apg) or steal balls (0.8spg). He can rebound... a bit (5.1rpg in 25.1mpg) for a SF. Right now, he's no more than a LE player. But he's young and may get better...
#13 Ron Mercer SG 23 6'7'' 210 B C C C+ C- C
2042 stats : 6.2ppg, 2.4rpg, 1.1spg, .452 FG% with the Denver Nuggets
For a lottery pick, and a player picked just after Kittles, Mercer is an overall disappointment. The only thing he can do is scoring, and he does not score a lot : he's worth only 12.5ppg /36min... in the worst team in the league.
#15 Derek Fisher PG 24 6'1'' 200 C C+ B- B C C
2042 stats : 3.3ppg, 1.6apg, .426 FG% with the Atlanta Hawks
Fish is not a bust if we consider his rookie ratings or his position in the draft. But it's a shame to see a version of him who can even shoot the ball. OK defender, but that's all.
#16 Marc Jackson C 24 6'10'' 270 C D+ D C+ C+ C
2042 stats : DNP
#18 Mark Pope PF 24 6'10'' 235 C+ C- C C+ B- C
2042 stats : 2.6ppg, 1.4rpg, .390 FG% with the Houston Rockets
These guys are the traditional "lol they were picked in the top 20 and were paid about $2.5M last year" players of this class.
