Top Potential FAs
Here are the top upcoming free agents. I ranked them based on ratings, production, age and potential. This looks to be a good FA crop.
Honorable Mentions: Marcus Camby(Bulls), Tim Duncan(Wizards), Mahney Long(Heat), Detlef Schrempf(Bucks), Latrell Sprewell(GSW)
5. Stanley Johnson SF 33 6'9'' 250 B+ B+ C C+ A- C
Stanley Johnson SF 41 39.5 26.9 11.0 2.7 1.8 0.2 3.9 .449 .812 .317
Team: Warriors
Johnson is the best player in this class averaging an insane 27 and 11 at SF, but at 33 years old a significant drop in production is likely to come. He is a top 5 player in the league, but he does not deserve the MAX contract this upcoming FA. A 3 year max would be the perfect deal for him, but at least one GM is going to throw a complete MAX contract at him. You'll be stuck with an average player with a 20,000,000+ salary the last 2-3 years on that contract. That could put teams in HC hell. At that point your only hope would be for Johnson to hang up the jersey early. Be careful when deciding what contract to offer Mr. Stanley Johnson.
4. Allen Iverson SG 24 6'0'' 165 B B+ A- B C- C
Allen Iverson SG 37 37.9 22.0 5.2 4.6 2.0 0.3 3.6 .432 .811 .359
Team: Raptors
Iverson is going to get the MAX contract even though some GMs are torn on his ability to defend in the league. He is simply too short to defend shooting guards and too loose with ball to play PG. He could average up to a whopping 4.5 TOPG playing PG. Still, his offensive prowess is not to be overlooked and he can make a great second option on a contender. He needs to improve on his percentages. A physical camp should help with his defense and possibly put him into the superstar category. He might be worth the MAX depending on which GM signs him.
3. LaPhonso Ellis PF 28 6'9'' 250 A- C- C A- B+ C
LaPhonso Ellis PF 41 33.9 20.6 11.4 2.5 0.9 3.8 1.6 .440 .650 .000
Team: Magic
Ellis is the best big man in this free agent crop and he is going to get a well deserved max. He is a complete player, dominating both on the offensive and defensive ends. He guarantees you 20/10 and at least 3 blocks per game for the next 3 seasons. Towards the end of his contract he will slow down, but the production he gives you the first couple of years will completely justify the max contract given to him. So far he has shown no signs of slowing down and can still receive a "Hes Still Got It Camp" to rejuvenate him some when his production finally drops. If there weren't so many great players coming off of their rookie contracts he would be higher.
2. Stephon Marbury PG 22 6'2'' 180 B- A- B- B C- C
Stephon Marbury PG 37 35.4 20.1 5.6 8.3 1.3 0.2 2.6 .455 .797 .450
Team: Wolves
Marbury is a great #2 option for the KG led Wolves and he'll parlay that role into a MAX contract. He is shooting great percentages from the field and from deep, but has room for improvement from the charity stripe. Surprisingly, he doesn't have a problem with turning the ball over like most NBADSL point guards do. He is a solid defender and rarely gets torched. Steph also helps out the squad by getting in the paint and snagging 5 boards per game. Super hypes Steph up to no end, but there is a good reason for that. He is a MAX player.
1. Steve Nash PG 23 6'3'' 195 C A A- B- C- B
Steve Nash PG 37 34.1 18.3 4.3 8.7 2.2 0.1 3.4 .507 .923 .480
Team: Rockets
Plain and simple, Steve Nash is the best shooter in the game. He's percentages are unholy, ungodly, unfucking believable. Although, Nash has two drawbacks to his game: his turnovers and his defense. 3.4 TOPG isn't the worst in the league, but it comes close. As of now, he is a liability on defense and can't guard an of the elite point guards in the league. Clubz needs to camp Nash's handles, quickness and perimeter defense and that will turn Nash into the best point guard in the league and a perennial MVP candidate.
