It's been four seasons since the 2038 rookies entered the league. Where are they now ? Are the best prospect from the draft now superstars ? Who are the busts and who are the steals ? Here's an article about all of them. I'm a bit late because of my holidays, so they had one more TC than the rookies I checked the previous seasons. Also, I didn't check any second-rounder and some players just disappeared.
*** THE STARS ***
#1 Jason Kidd PG 25 6'4'' 210 C B A+ A C C
2041 stats : 11.8ppg, 11.4apg, 6.4rpg, 2.5spg, .438 FG% with the Los Angeles Clippers
2042 stats : 9.8ppg, 9.2apg, 5.1rpg, 2.0spg, .444 FG% with the Los Angeles Clippers
Kidd is somewhere between the star status... and the complete bust. On the bright side, he's a terrific defender, the best defensive guard in the league. He's also great on assists, at least he was last year. But he just can't score. In that particular Clipper team, though. With Shaq, Manigault, Laettner, the Clippers focus on inside scoring and obviously it does not fit Kidd's playing style. I think he would be a 15-10 player in an outside team.
#3 Jerry Stackhouse SG 24 6'6'' 218 A- B B- B- D B
2041 stats : 20.6ppg, 3.8apg, 1.2spg, .452 FG% with the Phoenix Suns
2042 stats : 27.0ppg, 3.7apg, 2.0spg, .480 FG% with the Phoenix Suns
Stack has some tough early years in the league as he was not able to get playing time in one of the best teams. His trade to Phoenix started his NBA career and he's now looking really, really good. He's a top scorer (7th) and does a little of everything, and he's only 24. The next Jalek Felton.
#6 Damon Stoudamire PG 24 5'10'' 171 C+ A- A- B+ C B
2041 stats : 23.1ppg, 8.2apg, 5.1rpg, 2.0spg, .464 FG%, .416 3P% with the Indiana Pacers
2042 stats : 21.9ppg, 10.1apg, 4.7rpg, 1.9spg, .470 FG% with the Indiana Pacers
Stoudamire has been the best player in this draft from the start. He was rookie of the year after a great first season (19.6ppg, 8.5apg) and never looked back. He's a great shooter, nice scorer, one of the best passers in the league (5th), a capable defender. Both a star and a HUGE steal at #6.
*** THE ROLEPLAYERS ***
#5 Michael Finley SF 24 6'7'' 215 B- A- C B+ C- B
2041 stats : 12.3ppg, 4.5rpg, 1.4spg, .461 FG%, .435 3P% with the Miami Heat
2042 stats : 13.4ppg, 5.6rpg, 1.2spg, .429 FG%, .360 3P% with the Miami Heat
Finley also had a very tough start in the league : he did not play a single minute in his sophomore season. But he's now an established starter, great shooter and nice defender, especially for a SF. Not a natural scorer, but a very useful roleplayer though.
#7 Ben Wallace PF 25 6'8'' 245 C D- D A- A- B
2041 stats : 4.6ppg, 9.8rpg, 2.4bpg, .395 FG% with the Houston Rockets
2042 stats : 5.5ppg, 13.0rpg, 3.2bpg, .362 FG% with the Houston Rockets
Big Ben is exactly where we expected him to be : great defender, nice shot blocker (9th), great rebounder (3rd), can't score a single basket. He averaged below .400 FT% and below .500 FT% every year so far, and it does not seem to be about to change. Every GM would want him in his team, though.
#10 Joe Smith PF 24 6'10'' 225 B+ C D B C+ B
2041 stats : 14.9ppg, 8.4rpg, 1.6bpg, .456 FG% with the Los Angeles Lakers
2042 stats : 10.2ppg, 4.1rpg, .400 FG% with the Los Angeles Lakers
#11 Rasheed Wallace PF 25 6'10'' 230 B B- C- B+ C+ B
2041 stats : 13.9ppg, 7.7rpg, 1.3spg, .478 FG% with the Brooklyn Nets
2042 stats : 10.3ppg, 7.9rpg, .427 FG%, .545 ¨P% with the Brooklyn Nets
#15 Corliss Williamson SF 25 6'6'' 244 B+ C- D- B- C+ C
2041 stats : 8.1ppg, 3.5rpg, .493 FG% with the Portland Trail Blazers
2042 stats : DNP
The Lakers team is a mess and that's a shame because Smith plays only 18.9mpg this year. He's a great scorer, a capable defender and can grab 8ish rebounds a game. Sheed would have been a steal if I did the article last year, but his TC were disappointing (both defense and rebounding went down). Still, he's doing good for a player picked outside the top ten. I dunno why Williamson is not playing this year, but he can be a very efficient scorer from the bench : last year he scored 8.1ppg in only 15.5mpg.
*** THE STEALS ***
#12 Shawn Respert PG 25 6'2'' 185 C A- C- B D+ B
2041 stats : 27.7ppg, 4.0apg, 2.0spg, .435 FG% with the Denver Nuggets
2042 stats : 24.1ppg, 3.8apg, 1.4spg, .452 FG%, .437 3P% with the Denver Nuggets
Respert is by far the biggest surprise in this draft. He was a terrific scorer from the start : as a rookie he scored 9.0ppg in 14.8mpg ! The Nuggets started him only in his third year and it was unreal : he averaged 31.4ppg... Great scorer, good defender, horrible with the ball (4.6apg/4.0topg in his best season), quite cheap ($40M/5years).
#13 Kurt Thomas PF 24 6'9'' 230 B C- C- B+ B+ D
2041 stats : 13.0ppg, 9.8rpg, 1.0spg, .439 FG% with the Charlotte Hornets
2042 stats : 14.8ppg, 11.6rpg, 1.2spg, .388 FG% with the Charlotte Hornets
#16 Bryant Reeves C 25 7'0'' 275 B C D+ B B D
2041 stats : 8.4ppg, 5.3rpg, .445 FG% with the Los Angeles Clippers
2042 stats : 10.3ppg, 6.5rpg, .488 FG% with the Los Angeles Clippers
#17 Tyus Edney PG 23 5'10'' 152 C B- A- B- D+ C
2041 stats : 6.4ppg, 4.0apg, .415 FG% with the Charlotte Hornets
2042 stats : 9.0ppg, 8.9apg, 1.6spg, .416 FG% with the Charlotte Hornets
Thomas had a bad TC (both defense and rebounding down) but he's still a very, very nice roleplayer. He's an incredible rebounder who can score and defends very well, even if he does not block a lot of shots. Reeves only plays 20.8mpg in Los Angeles, but if he played 36mpg his stats would be 17.8ppg and 11.3rpg ! That's amazing for a non-lottery player, and he's really cheap ($32M/5years) too. Edney is 23 and still a prospect but he's already a great passer (near top ten in assists). He steals some balls, but for now he can't really defend his guy or score.
#25 Alan Henderson PF 25 6'9'' 235 B- D+ D B C+ C
2041 stats : 3.3ppg, 3.3rpg, .333 FG% with the Indiana Pacers
2042 stats : 3.8ppg, 3.3rpg, .463 FG% with the Utah Jazz
#29 Cherokee Parks PF 25 6'11'' 240 C C D+ B B- C
2041 stats : 4.5ppg, 6.1rpg, .418 FG% with the Phoenix Suns
2042 stats : 3.1ppg, 6.4rpg, 1.1bpg, .341 FG% with the Phoenix Suns
Any player between #25 and #29 who gets quality minutes in the league is a steal. Henderson is a good bench big who can do a lot of things, while Parks is a purely defensive player.
*** THE BUSTS ***
#2 Ray Allen SG 25 6'5'' 205 C A C+ B- C- B
2041 stats : 10.0ppg, 4.6rpg, 3.6apg, .468 FG%, .438 3P% with the Washington Wizards
2042 stats : 10.3ppg, 5.0rpg, 3.6apg, .540 FG%, .438 3P% with the Washington Wizards
I call bust. #2 in the draft and he can't score more than 10ppg or defend. Sure, the Wizards don't play the right offense for Allen, and he averaged 17.0ppg as a sophomore. But his inside rating went down in TC and he's gonna be a specialist for the rest of his career. Never a franchise player.
#4 Antonio McDyess SF 25 6'9'' 220 B+ C C- B C+ B
2041 stats : 9.3ppg, 5.8rpg, .474 FG% with the Toronto Raptors
2042 stats : 12.0ppg, 7.1rpg, 1.2bpg, .417 FG% with the Toronto Raptors
McDyess was picked before Finley, Stoudamire and Ben Wallace, but he's far from these guys right now. He can score a bit... maybe. If he's PF and the offensive focus is inside ? Not a rebounder, not a great defender. Not a top five pick.
#8 Ed O'Bannon SF 24 6'8'' 222 B C C- B+ C C
2041 stats : 2.2ppg, 1.5rpg, .377 FG% with the Utah Jazz
2042 stats : 6.5ppg, 3.6rpg, .462 FG% witj the Utah Jazz
Who's that guy ?
#9 Theo Ratliff C 24 6'11'' 235 C C- D- A- B- C
2041 stats : 4.3ppg, 5.7rpg, 2.1bpg, .409 FG% with the Sacramento Kings
2042 stats : 5.2ppg, 7.8rpg, 2.8bpg, .372 FG% with the Sacramento Kings
Ratliff was picked just after Ben Wallace, and he's just like Big Ben... without the rebounding ability. Great shotblocker, but can a center who can't score or rebound ever be a starter ?
#14 Greg Ostertag C 24 7'0'' 280 C+ C- D B+ C+ C
2041 stats : DNP
2042 stats : DNP
Ostertag doesn't look bad on paper. But he played 37 games in his first four NBA years, and that's laughable for a top 15 pick. LLE/min type player.

2041 stats : DNP
2042 stats : 0.5ppg, 0.8apg, .125 FG% with the Miami Heat
I love these 2042 stats. Snow played 42 minutes this season and went 5-40 from the field. Yek. Worst offensive player in the league ?
