MVP is the league’s most prestigious award for an individual player. In the past the award has been heavily favored to point guards, mostly because they can generate high assist stats which other positions typically don’t. These past few seasons not much has changes aside from the addition of a couple of bigs. This years MVP race could be a tight one with a lot of good players out there. We have not seen player of the week dominated by any one player and player of the month has been a different player each month so far. So lets go over some of the candidates for this reward going into the final 20 days of the season
1. Shaq- He is probably my favorite for the MVP this year. He is currently 4th in the league in scoring with 27.6 per points per game. He is second in rebounding with 13.8 a game and third in blocks with 3.6 per contest. Shaq is shooting a good % from the field and is also on a Clippers team that shares the best record in the NBA with the Grizzlies and the Hawks. Shaq hasn’t won player of the week but asserted his dominance enough to earn a player of the month recognition and is my favorite to win the award this season.

2. Klym Artamonov- I have no idea who this guy is or why he is so good but if any point guard can take the award away from Penny it is Klym. The hawks are on fire sharing the best record in the league. This can be heavily attributed to his success. A three time player of the week and the recent player of the month Klym is averaging 24.9 points per game which is 10th in the league and he is 5th in assists with 10.3. More impressive then him setting up his teammates, is how efficient he is doing it. The 5th year player only averages 1.8 turn over per game which is one of the lowest among the top guards in the league.

3. Stanley Johnson- This guy is having one hell of a season. He has won player of the week for the last two weeks of the season. He is leading the league in points per game with 30.7 and he is also averaging 10 rebounds again at small forward. Stanley is dishing out 4 assists per game and is one of the main reasons the Warriors are in the playoff hunt. The team is 32-34 but in a weak west will probably make the playoffs. With out Stanley they would be a top 5 lotto team for sure. He may be one of the most valuable players right now but we have not seen a small forward win this award in a long time, that will hurt him the most.

4. Davon Dillard- he has to be in the conversation also. After missing majority of last season the rockets were basically nothing. This year the Rockets are a good team for the first time in a long time. Dillard at age 31 is having a great season pushing the Rockets to 38-30 with his 29.3 points per game. At Shooting guard he is also getting a block a game and two steals which proves he is no slouch on the other end. Dillard is third in three point % in the league and 5th in shooting %. Those stats show that efficiency is one of the most important stats to be successful in this league.

5.Penny Hardaway- His scoring may be down this year but is still respectable at 23.3 per game. The trip double machine himself is averaging 6 rebounds per game which is extremely good for a point guard. Penny is dishing out dimes at 10.7 per game and is 3rd in the league. His turnover per game are low and the Cavs are in the playoff hunt. Although he isn’t scoring as much as last year you can not count out last years MVP when having the conversation on who is most valuable this current season.

There are some other players who could contest for this award. But their chances are slim due to stiff competition.
Peewee Kirkland- team record 48-19, 19 ppg, 8.3 assists, 2 turnovers and top 5 fg%
Eddy Terrel- team record 47-19, 22 ppg, 10.9 assists
Laphonso Ellis- team record 36-30 25.7 ppg 12.4 reb 2.8 blocks 49% shooting
