It's been four seasons since the 2036 rookies entered the league. Where are they now ? Are the best prospect from the draft now superstars ? Who are the busts and who are the steals ? Here's an article about all of them. Spoiler alert : another great draft, with a dominant big three, a super nice lottery... and almost nothing outside of it.
*** " I'M MVP BITCH " ***
#2 Anfernee Hardaway PG 6'7'' 200 25 B B+ A B C B
2040 stats : 26.0ppg, 11.5apg, 6.3rpg, 2.2spg, .465 FG%, .401 3P% with the Cavaliers
Everybody knew Penny would be good, but that much good, and that early in his career ? He was great as a rookie (16.7ppg, 7.1apg, 1.9spg, .462 FG%) but there were still doubts, not on his tremendous scoring abilities but on his point guard skills. Three years later, his assists/turnovers ratio (5.0) is unbelievably good ! Scoring, passing, defense, rebounds, he brings it all. Wow.
*** THE STARS ***
#1 Grant Hill SF 24 6'8'' 225 A- C B+ B C+ C
2040 stats : 20.0ppg, 7.0rpg, 4.3apg, 1.4spg, .454 FG% with the Wizards
Picking Hill with the first choice was definitely a mistake, but still he's doing fine. He's a nice rebounder, OK defender, great passer. He can score for sure, but his full inside orientation can be a problem. It can also be very, very valuable in this league full of shooters. Potential is a question, as his current numbers look very much like his rookie numbers (20.8ppg, 6.5rpg, 3.3apg, .445 FG%).
#3 Glenn Robinson SF 25 6'7'' 235 B B+ C- B+ C+ B
2040 stats : 22.9ppg, 9.8rpg, 1.9spg, .441 FG%, .446 3P% with the Suns
Big Dog's only weakness is passing (1.8apg, 2.9topg). In every other area he's better than Hill. Great shooter, great defender, tremendous rebounder for his size. Could very much become a superstar in the next few years.
#4 Allan Houston SG 24 6'6'' 200 B- A- C C+ C- C
2040 stats : 19.9ppg, 5.5rpg, 3.4apg, 1.7spg, .475 FG%, .404 3P% with the Nuggets
There were three great choices in this draft, and then a lot of similar players. Houston is averaging almost 20ppg with great percentages, so he's ranked in the star category, but his defense is a real issue. Nice on steals though.
#5 Jamal Mashburn SF 24 6'8'' 240 B+ B+ C C+ C C
2040 stats : 20.4ppg, 4.8rpg, 2.4apg, 1.3spg, .476 FG%, .426 3P% with the Spurs
Same for Mashburn, except he's weaker on steals and way more valuable on offense as he can play in every focus. Also, he played this last year in San Antonio with players like MJ, Charlie Scott and Dominique Wilkins, and managed to score a lot. Not far from the big three.
*** THE ROLEPLAYERS ***
#6 Eddie Jones SG 24 6'6'' 190 C+ A- C- B C C
2040 stats : 16.2ppg, 6.9rpg, 2.4spg, .457 FG%, .412 3P%
Jones is a great stats defender, he was 5th in the league in steals last season. But he's a bit disappointing in man-to-man defense. Great shooter, can score a little in the paint, a very nice roleplayer... but really overpaid with his $100M/6years.
#7 Brian Grant C 6'9'' 254 24 B- D+ C- A- B+ B
2040 stats : 7.2ppg, 10.3rpg, 2.7bpg, .445 FG% with the Cavaliers
Grant is an elite defensive big. Great rebounder, great shotblocker, he does everything a team needs except scoring. His offensive percentages are not bad, he just doesn't shoot a lot. Very useful player. Still a free agent after day 1-2.
#9 Vin Baker PF 24 6'11'' 234 B+ C- C B+ C+ B
2040 stats : 8.5ppg, 6.5rppg, 1.1bpg, .457 FG%
Baker played only 23.5mpg last year, his 36 minutes stats would be 13.0ppg, 10.0rpg and 1.7bpg. That's not bad, and that's even great considering he was in an outside focused team with three great shooters (Dumars, Smith, Rider).
#12 Jalen Rose SF 25 6'8'' 210 C B- B+ B+ C C
2040 stats : 8.4ppg, 4.5rpg, 3.7apg, 1.2spg, .496 FG%, .504 3P% with the Wolves
There's a lot to love about Rose. He's a great defender. He's a nice passer with an excellent A/T ratio (2.6). He's one of the best shooters in the league. He just can't really score (8.4ppg in 30.4mpg). Is that a problem ? I don't know.
#14 Donyell Marshall PF 6'9'' 230 25 B C+ C B- B B
2040 stats : 11.0ppg, 9.0rpg, 1.3bpg, .403 FG% with the Jazz
Marshall can score a bit, he can rebound a bit, he can block some shots. That's it. Enough for him to make a career in the league. He had his best season (13.0ppg, 9.3rpg, 1.4bpg, .431 FG%) as a sophomore though.
*** THE STEALS ***
#10 Nick Van Exel PG 6'1'' 170 25 C A B+ B D+ C
2040 stats : 15.1ppg, 7.5apg, 1.8spg, .482 FG%, .444 3P% with the Mavericks
#11 Sam Cassell PG 24 6'3'' 195 C A- B+ B+ C- C
2040 stats : 9.9ppg, 6.9apg, 4.0rpg, 1.6spg, .496 FG%, .428 3P% with the Spurs
It's not every year that players like Van Exel and Cassell can be picked in 10th and 11th. Very deep draft. Van Exel is doing great in the best Western team. Terrific shooter, decent defender, not that great in the passing area though (2.9 A/T ratio). Cassell's stats are biaised because for some reason he did not play a lot with the Spurs. The season before that, he was a starter in Detroit and averaged 12.4ppg, 9.7apg and 2.0spg, with a .444 percentage from behind the arc. He's a great shooter who never played in an outside-focused team, a great passer and a nice defender.
#15 Bobby Hurley PG 24 6'0'' 165 C B- A- B D C
2040 stats : 5.5ppg, 3.4apg, .482 FG%, .429 3P% with the 76ers
Hurley stats on a 36 minutes basis (he was playing 19.2mpg) : 10.3ppg, 6.4apg, 1.5spg and a great A/T ratio (3.4). Not star numbers, but outside the lottery, that's solid. Also, he's a great shooter, for some reason. Maybe a bit overpaid at $15M/3years, though.
#17 Eric Montross C 7'0'' 270 24 B C- D- B B- B
2040 stats : 15.0ppg, 8.1rpg, .435 FG% with the Pistons
Considering he was on a top team, Montross numbers look good, but they look even better on a 36 minutes basis : 18.9ppg, 10.2rpg, 1.1spg and 1.1bpg. Great scorer in an inside focused team, very tall, better rebounder than ratings tell. Still a free agent.
#21 Yinka Dare C 24 7'0'' 265 C+ D+ F B- A- C
2040 stats : 8.0ppg, 8.5rpg, 1.7bpg with the Kings
Getting a useful player after the 20th pick has to be a steal anyway. Dare isn't great, but he can score a bit, rebound a lot and block shots. Always useful.
#28 Carlos Rogers C 6'11'' 220 24 C+ D+ D- B+ B- C
2040 stats : 10.2ppg, 8.6rpg, 1.4bpg, .437 FG% with the Heat
Almost every year a late first rounder becomes great. In the 2037 draft it's Carlos Rogers : way better scorer than ratings tell, good rebounder, great defender. A good player to catch in FA 3-4.
*** THE BUSTS ***
#8 Gheorghe Muresan C 25 7'7'' 315 C D+ D A- B- B
2040 stats : 4.5ppg, 8.4rpg, 2.3bpg, .404 FG% with the Bucks
Muresan is not a bust, but he was selected before Van Exel and Cassell, and that's not a very pleasant thought for the Bucks. Wait, they don't care, they just won a ring with Muresan in the team. He's a great defender and shotblocker, but can't do a lot more. His rebounding numbers are disappointing for a 7'7" center and he really can't score.
#13 Juwan Howard PF 6'9'' 250 23 B D+ C C B C
2040 stats : 4.9ppg, 4.5rpg, .454 FG% with the Raptors
Not a bust either, but a lottery player who can't defend and whose offensive numbers (11.0ppg on a 36 minutes basis) are quite low deserves to be here. Pretty good rebounder (10.1rpg on a 36 minutes basis) though. Can't wait for someone to overpay him in the next FA sims.
#16 Lamond Murray SF 6'7'' 236 25 B- B- C C+ C C
2040 stats : 2.6ppg, 1.2apg, .394 FG%, .375 3P% with the Hawks
Murray only played 6.5mpg last year in Atlanta, but his offensive numbers were still horrible. His career percentages are scary : .416 FG%, .325 3P%, and he keeps trying to score from behind the arc. He can average 12-14ppg, but I doubt anyone would want him to do that...
#18 Irshad Hunte PF 6'9'' 227 23 B- C+ C- C+ C+ B
2040 stats : DNP
#19 Austin Campbell PF 6'10'' 259 24 C C C C+ C C

2040 stats : DNP
#23 Ogugua Anunoby SF 6'10'' 226 22 C+ C D- C+ C- B
2040 stats : DNP
A lot of really, really useless players around the 20th position of the draft. Gotta love Campbell ratings : guy is a 6'10" PF with similar abilities in outside shooting and handling than in inside scoring and rebounds. Would be another Sabonis/Walton, if he was all Bs instead of all Cs.
