Half the season is gone, if there were mid-season awards, who would be in the All-League teams ? Let's check this out.
CENTER
Shaquille O'Neal (27.7ppg, 14.0rpg, 3.1bpg, .490 FG%) is still huge and he's clearly the best center in the league right now : 6th in scoring (and 1st among big men), 2nd in rebonds, 9th in blocks. Arvydas Sabonis (26.5ppg, 12.8rpg, 2.9bpg, .447 FG%) is having his best season by far in Boston : 7th in scoring, 4th in rebounds. And he's paid $11M ! Hakeem Olajuwon (23.0ppg, 13.0rpg, 3.9bpg, .415 FG%) is not as dominant as last year, but he's still great, especially in defense.
POWER FORWARD
It's really tough to choose the best power forwards in the league. My top choice, LaPhonso Ellis (21.3ppg, 11.6rpg, 2.7bpg, .479 FG%), is not even an All Star ! But I love what he's doing in New York and he's a way better defender than Karl Malone (22.7ppg, 11.3rpg, .453 FG%). I think Chris Webber (20.1ppg, 11.9rpg, 2.2bpg) deserves the third spot more than Dragan Bender. He's a great defender and 7th in the league in rebounds, plus he's carrying Chicago to a .500 record.
SMALL FORWARD
Except on the defensive end, Stanley Johnson (31.0ppg, 10.1rpg, 5.1apg, .472 FG%) is unbelievably great. There are probably very, very few players in the league history who averaged 30 points, 10 rebonds and 5 assists. He's the only real elite small forward, but there are a bunch of great ones, like Benji Wilson (24.7ppg, 6.1rpg, 4.1apg, .469 FG%) and Jan Niklas Wimberg (23.5ppg, 8.5rpg, 3.1apg, .471 FG%, .454 3P%). They were both snubbed for the All Star Game, though.
SHOOTING GUARD
Michael Jordan (35.1ppg, 8.0rpg, 4.6apg, 2.3spg, .481 FG%, .448 3P%) and Davon Dillard (34.5ppg, 7.1rpg, 1.9spg, .475 FG%, .408 3P%) are the two best scorers in the league by far. And before they got injured, they were lifting San Antonio and Houston to an unexpected level. Jalek Felton (30.2ppg, 6.5rpg, 4.0apg, 1.9spg, .501 FG%) lost a bit of scoring (5th in the league) this season, but he's still doing really great in the team with the best record in the league.
POINT GUARD
Sooo many great point guards out there, that I had to pass on the player of month #3 Klym Artamonov and on the 3rd scorer in the league Shawn Respert. Former MVP Anfernee Hardaway (23.1ppg, 11.1apg, 6.3rpg, 2.1spg, .449 FG%) is terrific in every domain, especially passing (2nd in the league in assists). But only his rebounding abilities earn him the first spot over John Stockton (24.1ppg, 10.1apg, 2.3spg, .480 FG%). The new All Star and best passer in the league Eddy Terrell (19.4ppg, 11.5apg, 2.0spg, 1.6bpg, .447 FG%) has to get the last spot.
ALL-LEAGUE FIRST TEAM
Shaquille O'NEAL (Clippers)
LaPhonso ELLIS (Knicks)
Stanley JOHNSON (Magic)
Michael JORDAN (Spurs)
Anfernee HARDAWAY (Cavaliers)
ALL-LEAGUE SECOND TEAM
Arvydas SABONIS (Celtics)
Karl MALONE (Mavericks)
Benji WILSON (Sonics)
Davon DILLARD (Rockets)
John STOCKTON (Blazers)
ALL-LEAGUE THIRD TEAM
Hakeem OLAJUWON (Raptors)
Chris WEBBER (Bulls)
Jan Niklas WIMBERG (Cavaliers)
Jalek FELTON (Pistons)
Eddy TERRELL (Bucks)
And who would be the MVP ? FBB loves point guards, so if the Cavaliers keep going Penny could win it again. Jordan and Dillard are heavily injured, so Felton has a chance too. And Shaq, obviously.
After the All-League teams, let's check out the All-Rookie teams
CENTER
Adonal Foyle (6.5ppg, 8.0rpg, 2.5bpg, .386 FG%) is already a valuable defensive center, horrible in offense but great otherwise : his 36minutes stats would be 10.8rpg and 3.4bpg ! Paul Rogers (5.3ppg, 6.1rpg, .457 FG%) benefits from an ugly Nuggets team to get the other spot.
POWER FORWARD
Two really great rookie on the power forward position. Kevin Garnett (10.3ppg, 8.9rpg, 2.3bpg, .458 FG%) is a starter in a really nice Wolves team : this plus his great defense earns him the 1st Team spot. Danny Fortson (15.0ppg, 8.9rpg, .443 FG%) is by far the greatest scorer in this class, and the clear steal of the draft, where he was picked with the 15th choice.
SMALL FORWARD
Keith Van Horn (9.3ppg, 6.0rpg, 1.2spg, .450 FG%, .508 3P%) is playing a lot of minutes in a very good Hawks team, he's a great shooter and a nice scorer. Stephen Jackson (6.0ppg, 3.5rpg, .385 FG%) is a bit raw, but he shows some potential.
SHOOTING GUARD
Kobe Bryant (9.7ppg, 4.9rpg, 2.3apg, 1.1spg, .430 FG%) is clearly a disappointment for now. He has a lot of progress to make to have a real impact in this league. As expected, Peja Stojakovic (8.9ppg, 5.1rpg, 1.0spg, .437 FG%, .416 3P%) is fitting very well in the Hawks shooting team.
POINT GUARD
Chauncey Billups (10.1ppg, 4.5apg, 1.5spg, .482 FG%, .432 3P%) is showing great offensive and defensive skills in Chicago. All he needs in to get better as a passing point guard. Derek Anderson (8.1ppg, 2.4apg, 1.4spg, .451 FG%) is also doing great in Atlanta, but I think he's definitely a shooting guard.
ALL-ROOKIE FIRST TEAM
Adonal FOYLE (Wizards, #11)
Kevin GARNETT (Wolves, #1)
Keith VAN HORN (Hawks, #7)
Kobe BRYANT (Sonics, #2)
Chauncey BILLUPS (Bulls, #4)
ALL-ROOKIE SECOND TEAM
Paul ROGERS (Nuggets, #20)
Danny FORTSON (Wizards, #15)
Stephen JACKSON (Spurs, #6)
Peja STOJAKOVIC (Hawks, #7 of the 2039 draft)
Derek ANDERSON (Hawks, #13)
The Rookie of the Year ? It's gonna be a power forward. I would say Garnett, because his team is great and he's a terrific defender, but Fortson is a real candidate.
And last but not least, the All-Defensive Teams. Not a lot to say, most of the time it's only maths, steals/blocks and also rebounds.
CENTER
Like I said in the All-League section, Hakeem Olajuwon (13.0rpg, 3.9bpg, 1.4spg) is a huge defender : 3rd in rebounds, 2nd in blocks, and he gets a lot of steals. Shawn Bradley (11.7rpg, 3.5bpg, 1.3spg), 5th in blocks, 10 in rebounds, get the other spot over Beka Burjanadze.
POWER FORWARD
Beka would have been in the All-Defensive Team as a power forward and there's no great replacement for him. Marcus Camby (9.1rpg, 2.9bpg, 0.8spg) looks like he's the better non-center in blocks. Dale Davis (11.1rpg, 2.7bpg, 0.8spg) is great too.
SMALL FORWARD
Surprise : Charlie Scott (7.0rpg, 2.2bpg, 1.4spg) is still the best stat defender at the small forward spot. Glenn Robinson (10.5rpg, 2.0spg, 0.4spg) is showing terrific rebounding skill and deserves the other spot.
SHOOTING GUARD
Davon Dillard (7.1rpg, 1.9spg, 1.1bpg) rebounding and blocking numbers get him the All-Defensive Team spot over Allen Iverson (5.0rpg, 2.5spg), 3rd in the league in steals.
POINT GUARD
I can't name in the 1st Team any other point guard than Eddy Terrell (4.9rpg, 2.0spg, 1.6bpg), even if his blocking numbers went down now that he plays only the point. Gary Payton (4.5rpg, 3.0spg), the best thief in the league, gets the other spot.
ALL-DEFENSIVE FIRST TEAM
Hakeem OLAJUWON (Raptors)
Marcus CAMBY (Bulls)
Charlie SCOTT (Pistons)
Davon DILLARD (Warriors)
Eddy TERRELL (Bucks)
ALL-DEFENSIVE SECOND TEAM
Shawn BRADLEY (Warriors)
Dale DAVIS (Celtics)
Glenn ROBINSON (Suns)
Allen IVERSON (Grizzlies)
Gary PAYTON (Nets)
The DPoY ? I guess it will be Olajuwon.
