One of the deeper drafts in this league, lots of star power and solid players to be had. *Lotto grades based primarily off TC and team need*
1. Knicks: Kevin Garnett PF
Pre TC: B- C C B B- A
Post TC: B C C B+ B- B
Review: Personally, Garnett should’ve been a lock for #1. But when Super jumped you knew Kobe was going, but two years in a row he shocks the NBADSL world and selects someone you wouldn’t expect. Garnett should’ve been an easy pick, I wouldn’t even have scouted. But Super made the right choice for going brains instead of heart.
Grade: A
2. Sonics: Kobe Bryant SG
Pre TC: B- C+ C C+ C A
Post TC: B- C+ C+ B- C B
Review: With Super picking first, everyone assumed SRG would get Garnett but that didn’t happen. It’s no mystery that SRG has a hard on for Chauncey and I dont think anyone would have been surprised if he picked him #2 overall. But Kobe is a good selection. Shakey notes but a +8 mentor from Rick Barry along with a +2 TC could quell any questions about pot.
Grade: B+
3. Rockets: Tracy McGrady SF
Pre TC: B- B- C B- C+ A
Post TC: B- B- C B- C+ A
Review: Easier to grade than you’d think. After falling in the draft two years in a row, Clubz still made the most of the opportunities and possibly got a little lucky still acquiring potential stars. Sure, the injury stipulation is a huge asterisk (<-- see what I did there?) on TMacs resume but he is still BPA and after drafting Nash last year, TMac is an easy selection.
Grade: B+
4. Bulls: Chauncey Billups PG
Pre TC: C B- C+ B- D+ A
Post TC: C B B- B D A
Review: That’s a big boy TC from Chauncey. SRG going +3 in lotto made the next two picks the most challenging. Bloop hasn’t been big on PG’s since his Mudiay-Newman-King days, but Chauncey is a good selection here. The BPA available were easily Chauncey and Milos and the Serbian would have been a nice fit with his handling, athleticism, and strong inside game to pair up with CWebb. However, notes on Mr. Big Shot “Considered the best PG in the class” make this a good and safe selection.
Grade: B
5. Lakers: Clay Elliott PF
Pre TC: C+ C+ D+ C+ C- A
Post TC: C+ C+ D B- C B
Review: Offseason priorities for the Lakers were 1. PG and 2. C. Clay seems to be promising and fits the style of basketball that the Lakers like. Could fill a need with the dominating post defense, but PG was a bigger need. Milos’ looks was the safer selection, but we won’t know about him for a couple season. Tough to grade, but a risk the Lakers didn’t need to take. If not for getting lucky and signing Joe Dumars in FA, this grade is an F. Lucky Lakers.
(I couldn't find a picture of Clay Elliot so here's a comic of Clayface vs Batman)
Grade: C+
6. Spurs: Stephen Jackson SF
Pre TC: C+ B C B- C C
Post TC: C+ B C B C C
Review: Not really the most ideal situation for the Spurs heading into their CY. SJax versatility could fill two needs that that Spurs have lacked for numerous season, a PG and defense. +1 TC in defense would be nice for a team not in CY. I would’ve tried to trade the pick for win now players or at least moved up to take advantage of the Milos’ stipulation. Tough to grade but we’ll know at the end of the season how this turns out.
Grade: C
7. Hawks: Keith Van Horn PF
Pre TC: B- B- C- C C A
Post TC: B- B- C- C C B
Review: A same TC from the newest caucasian addition to the Hawks, arguably BPA with the MIlos stip coming into effect. Notes suggested defense needs work but scoring is off the charts. I like the selection, especially if his defense becomes average.
Grade: B-
8. Kings: Luke Jeter SG
Pre TC: C+ C- C- B- C+ A
Post TC: C+ C- C B C+ B
Review: Solid selection for the Kings. Paul Pressey is getting old and a potential replacement can be groomed under his wings. Only downside was his outside game, but notes seemed like they could become significantly better if worked on.
(No pictures of Luke Jeter, but here's one of Derek Jeter with a beard)
Grade: B-
9. Jazz: Antonio Daniels SG
Pre TC: B- C+ C+ C+ D- A
Post TC: B- B- C+ C+ D- A
Review: Jazz just love players that are versatile and can play PG. Daniels is one of those players and with promising notes can be important part of the team right away. Jazz have lacked a SG since the Shabazz Muhammed days, they very well might have finally found a mainstay at the two-guard.
Grade: B
10. Nets: Milos Obradovic PG
Pre TC: B C- B+ C+ D- A
Post TC: N/A
Review: Quality selection by the Nets. BPA was clearly the Serbian however the stipulation makes him useless for a couple season. He turned out to be good trade bait and reeled in a major haul with Ewing and Goodrich. Wizards now own the rights and have a player that could’ve easily been selected 4th overall. Only time will tell on him.
(No pictures of Milos but here's one of Serbia in relation to the rest of Europe)
Grade (Nets): A
Grade (Wizards): N/A
11. Rockets: Adonal Foyle PF
Pre TC: C F+ F+ B+ B- B
Post TC: C+ F+ F+ B+ B- B
Review: Rockets seemed to have their mind set on post defense. Foyle has no offensive game, but with no big men after letting Sam Bowie walk, this fills a need for Houston. Similar to drafting an offensive lineman in football, this is not a pretty pick but an important one. Also having a +8 mentor in DRob, Foyle can be a dominant post presence for the next decade.
Grade: B-
12. 76ers: Brevin Knight PG
Pre TC: C C- B- B D+ C
Post TC: C C B- B+ D+ C
Review: Another pick that I love. With defense-less “All Star” Tim Hardaway manning the point for Philly this gives a viable back up and fills a hole that Hardaway leaves open. Knight, similarly to Foyle is strictly defense so you know what you’re getting off the bat. If Brevin wasn’t just a sim player I think he’d consider this a perfect fit as well
Grade: B-
13. Hawks (via Pacers): Derek Anderson SG
Pre TC: C B C C+ D+ B
Post TC: C B C+ B- C- B
Review: Is Derek Anderson white? No! He’s actually black, who knows how he’ll be welcomed in Atlanta. But a +3 TC might soften up the whites a bit. A lot of teams this draft going for need rather than BPA, looks like the right choice. Could develop into a prominent scorer and while camps develop into a nice player (notes basically said the same)
Grade: B-
Honorable Non-Lotto Mention
16. Hornets: Cuttino Mobley SG
Pre TC: C B+ C C D+ B
Post TC: C B+ C+ C+ C- B
Review: LOVE this pick, not a need for the Hornets, but BPA instead. I tried trading back up to snag him starting at 10. +3 TC could mean good potential, no notes but Mobley was a good and long-lived player in the NBA. Steal at 16th overall for Hornets.
Grade: A+
