The Rivalry
It’s a snowy December night in philadephia, It’s the city of brotherly love. But tonight, there is hate in the air. The talk of the town has been the big game, scalpers are selling tickets outside for more than the cost of the recent sixers game. People are flocking into the doors two hours early, Every NBADSL scout is in attendance. We’re not talking about a sixers game here though, tonight the talk is about high school basketball. The matchup everyone has been waiting to see, Mt Zion Christian Academy VS Lower Merion High School. Tracy McGrady VS Kobe Bryant.
Even bigger then these two young stars games, are their mouths. Both have a disdain for each other and both feel like they want to prove that one is better than the other. It is their hate for each other which drives them to succeed in what they do. With every dribble they take, in their own head they strive to dribble better than the other, with every jumpshot, they strive to get a cleaner release than the other. This is what will lead them to success in the NBADSL. Their hate fuels their passion.
The ball is tipped, Lower Merion controls, Kobe has the ball at the top of the key, McGrady is all over him, Kobe jab steps, steps back, pulls up and its good. 2-0 Lower Merion. McGrady calls for the ball, hes hounded by Kobe as he brings it up the court, he puts his back to the basket, McGrady turns right, gives kobe an elbow in the ribs and pulls up from 17 feet. Basket Good. He is seen jawing with Kobe coming down the floor. Kobe takes the ball from the wing, tries to go right, but McGrady is there waiting, he crosses to the left and gives a headfake, McGrady bites, Kobe jumps into his body absorbing the contact, double clutch and in, an And 1 from about 14 feet. McGrady then complains to the refs. 5-2 Lower Merion. McGrady coms back down the court, still jawing with Kobe, he commands the ball in the high post. He swings through and connects with his elbow to Kobes jaw. Kobe is down, McGrady acts as if he didn’t do nothing, and almost as if this was the thrilla in manila, the ref has to step in to interfere between these two, but not before kobe throws a punch and connects with McGradys chin.
The game was called after that, everyone around the world saw it. Was it a cheap shot by McGrady? Or was Kobe really flopping? Defenders of McGrady say that it was a clear flop by Bryant, Kobes camp want McGrady banned from professional basketball. However, whats done is done. Kobe Bryant was banned from playing High School basketball and moved to play in Italy for the remainder of the year, Tracy McGrady, went to get stitches and came back to lead his team to the state title.
It is now, almost a year later where they both have declared for the NBADSL NBA draft where we are able to catch up with them, I spoke to both players via phone and asked them about the other. Was it a cheap shot? “Hell No!” Tracy says, “Get out of here with that, he flopped, hes scared of playin me, we’ll see what happens in the league man.” Kobe Bryant however, had a different recollection of what happened, “The motherfucker swung his elbow straight at my face, you tell me what you call that, basketball? That aint’ basketball [Derogetory Term for an African American].” It is clear that these two are letting their disdain for each other fuel what it is that drives their god given talents. Tracy tore his ACL this past week, what is clear is that he will miss his rookie season, when asked about how it will effect his game he had this to say, “Look man, injuries happen, this is a contact sport, I’ll be back, stronger, better, faster and better.” We have faith that T-Mac will come back from this and be the player he once was, when we asked Kobe what he thought about the injury he had this to say, “Karmas a bitch.” When asked to elaborate he declined to comment. We asked them both where they would like to play next year, Kobe had this to say, “Madison Square Garden man, it’s the greatest arena on earth, the energy there is untouchable, I would love if the Knicks drafted me.” When we asked Tracy where he wanted to play, its to no ones surprise that he also picked the Knicks, “New York man, that’s the city where players become legends.”
The funny thing is, as of now, the Knicks are in pole position to have the top pick in the draft, and with that their choice of either one of these two young stars. But don’t count out Dukes Kevin Garnett for the top pick either, when we saw him walking around New York City this week on his way to catch his buddy Stephon Marbury’s game, we asked him if he wanted to play with his buddy in New York, he looked at us, pounded his chest like a gorilla, looked up at the skyline of times square and shouted at the top of his lungs, “ANYTHING IS POSSSSIBLLLLEEEEEEEE!!!!”
So whats in the future for these two? Nobody knows, but what we do know, is that they are coming. They are coming soon, and we should all be excited, no matter where they end up, they will both shine, and frankly, we can’t wait.
