Inspired by Braz’s article, bang for your buck$$$. The article will look at players who outperform the amount they are getting paid. Amount of money is listed as the total amount left, not amount per year. Don't cry if I miss your guy.
Rules are fairly simple:
1. Guys on rookie contracts are not included
2. Guys on max contracts are not included
3. Both contract and performance matters (i.e. a player with slightly worse stats maybe favored if his contract is better)
4. A player will be penalized when he is on a tanking team unless he’ll obviously continue to be a stud on a contender
STARTERS:
C: Arvydas Sabonis (Boston Celtics)
Contract: 35 million over 3 years
Key Stats: 22.9 PPG 10.0 RPG 3.4 APG 3.3 BPG .477 FG% .508 3P%
You cannot further appreciate Sabonis’ contract until you look at the amount of money itnas threw at Zhou Qi during free agency (worth 29 million in the 5th year of the contract, 6 million short of Sabonis’ 3 year contract). Don’t get me wrong, Qi is worth that much (at least until he declines) and GMs will still trade for him if given the chance (he has already been traded after signing that contract). Bottom line is that big men with the skillset of Sabonis and Qi (can score inside and out, can rebound the ball, and block shots) don’t grow on trees and getting one for around 12 million per year over the next 3 years is an absolute steal. Getbeard better take advantage of this before he needs to pay him more $$$.
PF: Derrick Coleman (Sacramento Kings)
Contract: 48 million over 4 years
Key Stats: 17.8 PPG 10.4 RPG 2.0 BPG .367 3P%
10+ million per year is a huge amount of money but when you look at the roster of every team in the league you'll realize that big men who can score, rebound, AND defend are either getting paid the max or are still on their rookie contract. Players like Sabonis and Coleman are some rare exceptions to that rule. As a matter of fact, DC will not earn the standard starting maximum salary of players coming of their rookie contracts (13 million) until he reaches the final year of his deal (worth 14 million). If he follows the trajectory of bigs in this league (he has already started down that path), then this contract will be worth every penny.
SF: Sam Perkins** (Sacramento Kings)
Contract: 10 million over 2 years
Key Stats: 21.2 PPG 7.8 RPG .483 FG% .452 3P%
Basenoc has lost some of his players to free agency for being cheap but this time he has struck gold with Coleman and Perkins. To be fair to base, he didn't really low balled Perkins since he was nothing more than a role player before coming to Sacramento (career averages of around 9/10 PPG and 7/8 RPG). The very first season playing for the Kings, Perkins immediately doubled his PPG. He also maintained his rebounding despite playing in the perimeter more often (I assumed that he played more PF when he was averaging 9 RPG). I have no doubts that just like his scoring, his contract will at least double when he enters free agency a couple of years from now. The question is: will base pay up?
** He plays SF according to box scores
SG: Dan Majerle (Washington Wizards)
Contract: 4.7 million over 1 year
Key Stats: 18.1 PPG 5.9 RPG 3.2 APG .496 FG%
Majerle is not the most glamorous player out there and he may not even be considered a star in Washington because of his teammates. But this has not stopped him from playing like one, at least on the offensive end, despite being only a 4th option behind Shaq, Goodrich, and former league MVP Monroe. Will aar play Majerle like a star despite being close to the HC or will someone swoop him from Washington for more than the amount aar is willing to pay? One thing is for sure: he is worth more than the MLE like contract he's earning with the way he is playing. For now, both Majerle and aar would have their focus on trying to defend their title, free agency can wait.
PG: Glynn Watson (Orlando Magic)
Contract: 840,850 over 1 year
Key Stats: 17.3 PPG 4.4 RPG 8.4 APG 1.6 SPG
Several years from now, flip will be telling his grandchildren that a guy named Glynn fucking Watson saved his ass from getting CY’d in an online NBA simulation league. Maybe that won't happen but Watson shouldn't have also played this well this season. Just how good is this guy? He only made Earl Monroe, the guy with multiple MVPs, expendable. Yes, his shooting sucks but you can't have it all when you pay your player a minimum contract. I'm just waiting for flip to give him the max so he can be the most overpaid player next season.
BACKUPS:
C: Will Perdue (Detroit Pistons)
Contract: 2.1 million over 1 year
Key Stats: 28.9 MPG 9.1 RPG 2.3 BPG
He doesn’t have the flashy stats but the guy does the dirty work for the Pistons. 9 rebounds and 2 blocks under 30 minutes for 2 million is all you can ask. With the Pistons having multiple players entering free agency, can themouth keep Perdue and stay under HC?
Honorable Mention: Isaiah Jasey – do it all big but I personally won’t pay him 4 times the amount Perdue is making
PF: Chris Washburn (New York Knicks)
Contract: 30 million over 4 years
Key Stats: 26.4 MPG 16.7 PPG 8.6 RPG 1.5BPG
Super would be crying like a baby if I didn’t include him so here he is (I bet he still is because I only listed him as a backup). 16.7/8.6/1.5 in under 30 minutes per game is very good but he's penalized for playing in New York. I doubt he plays this well when you switch him with Coleman
Honorable Mention: Oscar Schmidt – good scorer and rebounder but his defense is atrocious. Could have been a starter if it weren’t for that.
SF: Larry Simmons (Utah Jazz)
Contract: 24 million over 3 years
Key Stats: 24.8 PPG 6.1 RPG 3.5 APG
Apologies to Ricky Berry and Xeyrius Williams who are playing well on dirt cheap contracts but Simmons is playing like a star while earning only 8 million per year. Larry nearly got the start but Perkins’ earning 67% of what Simmons is earning despite having nearly the same numbers gave him the nod.
Honorable Mentions: Ricky Berry and Xeyrius Williams – both decent all-around players but just got beat by two clearly superior players
SG: Mark Aguirre (Milwaukee Bucks)
Contract: 7.8 million over 1 year
21.2 PPG 7.1 RPG .488 FG% .405 3P%
I still can’t believe he accepted the contract I gave him a couple of years ago. Aguirre cannot defend but he can light it up from all over the floor as evidenced by his %s. His rebounding is just a bonus.
Honorable Mention: Chris Mullin – nearly similar production as Aguirre but with a heftier contract
PG: Robert Pack (Golden State Warriors)
Contract: 15 million over 3 years
Key Stats: 15.7 PPG 7.7 APG 2.4 SPG .424 3P%
Look at his ratings and production and tell me he isn’t a steal with the MLE. If he wasn’t playing with Sprewell and Dillard, I bet his numbers would even be better. If ducksruleall can fix his TO issues, then he might turn out to be a star).
Honorable Mention: Luwane Pipkins – not impressive at all but the best I can find. Doesn’t hurt that he earns 1 million per year
