Half the season is gone, if there were mid-season awards, who would be in the All-League teams ? Let's check this out.
CENTER
Unlike one year ago, there's no clear "best center in the league" this season. Of course, Shaquille O'Neal (26.6ppg, 13.1rpg, 2.9rpg, .461 FG%) is still huge, but his scoring went down a little (not in the league top 10) when he left Philly. The biggest difference is that Hakeem Olajuwon (28.1ppg, 13.0rpg, 3.2bpg, .446 FG%) is huge too ! He's 8th in scoring, 4th in rebounds, 5th in blocks and could eject Shaq from the All-League 1st Team this year. Patrick Ewing (23.9ppg, 11.3rpg, 2.8bpg, .472 FG%) is not exactly in the same dimension, but he's doing great in Los Angeles.
POWER FORWARD
Larry Nance (28.6ppg, 12.5rpg, 1.3bpg, .481 FG%) will get back to power forward soon, so I place him there. He's undoubtedly the best at this spot in the league (4th in scoring, 5th in rebounds), but Karl Malone (27.6ppg, 12.0rpg, 3.3apg, .497 FG%) is having an amazing season too. And Detlef Schrempf (27.4ppg, 9.9rpg, 3.3apg, .460 FG%) is doing an impressive job with the Clippers !
SMALL FORWARD
I don't care that Charlie Scott (21.7ppg, 7.3rpg, 4.5apg, 2.3bpg, 1.7spg, .488 FG%, .504 3P%) played too few games to be in the All Star Game, he's still one of the best players in the league. Is it unfair to choose him over Stanley Johnson (24.8ppg, 10.1rpg, 4.1apg, 1.5spg, .439 FG%) ? To be honest I think they are at the exact same level... Dominique Wilkins (26.3ppg, 6.4rpg, 2.9apg, .457 FG%) is the best scoring small forward, but he's not as good as this great duo.
SHOOTING GUARD
This spot is loaded with so much talent that I have to pass on former MVP Kobe Paras and on Wolves franchise player Mitch Richmond ! But three players play better basketball than them, and they are the three best scorers in the league : Latrell Sprewell (30.1ppg, 6.7rpg, 3.2apg, 2.7spg, .470 FG%), Jalek Felton (31.8ppg, 7.7rpg, 3.6apg, 1.9spg, .475 FG%, .423 3P%) and Michael Jordan (31.3ppg, 7.7rpg, 4.1apg, 2.1spg, .452 FG%). I simply ranked them by their team record.
POINT GUARD
It's always tough to rank point guards as they can excel in various domains. But Ty Hudson (27.2ppg, 9.8apg, 4.6rpg, 2.5spg, .418 FG%) is by far the best point guard in the league, and also the player who spent the most time on the field. John Stockton (21.2ppg, 11.9apg, 2.3spg, .448 FG%, .422 FG%) is the best passer in the league and the leader of the best team in the NBADSL. There are lots of candidates for the last spot, but I give it to Penny Hardaway (27.2ppg, 9.8apg, 6.1rpg, 2.5spg, .477 FG%), who already looks like a monster.
ALL-LEAGUE FIRST TEAM
Shaquille O'NEAL (Wizards)
Larry NANCE (Pistons)
Charlie SCOTT (Pistons)
Latrell SPREWELL (Warriors)
Ty HUDSON (Bucks)
ALL-LEAGUE SECOND TEAM
Hakeem OLAJUWON (Raptors)
Karl MALONE (Mavericks)
Stanley JOHNSON (Magic)
Jalek FELTON (Suns)
John STOCKTON (Blazers)
ALL-LEAGUE THIRD TEAM
Patrick EWING (Clippers)
Detlef SCHREMPF (Clippers)
Dominique WILKINS (Nets)
Michael JORDAN (Spurs)
Penny HARDAWAY (Cavaliers)
And who would be the MVP ? Shaq, Nance, Sprewell, Hudson are all candidates. I would vote for Ty, he's a freak.
After the All-League teams, let's check out the All-Rookie teams
CENTER
That's a strange rookie season for draft number one Tim Duncan (9.8ppg, 9.2rpg, 1.9bpg in 25.9mpg, .432 FG%) : he's as good as expected, but he's only a backup in a nice Pacers (20-16) team ! His stats per 36 minutes : 13.6ppg, 12.8rpg, 2.6bpg... Samaki Walker (7.5ppg, 8.4rpg, 1.0spg, 1.0bpg in 25.1mpg, .410 FG%) is looking nice too and his stats should improve as he will start in Philly.
POWER FORWARD
Marcus Camby (12.4ppg, 8.3rpg, 2.5bpg in 29.5mpg, .426 FG%) had a great impact from the beginning in a very weak Bulls team. Antoine Walker (10.2ppg, 7.8rpg in 25.8mpg, .470 FG%, .515 3P%) is nice on offense too, but he will be a liability in defense his whole career.
SMALL FORWARD
Antawn Jamison (9.8ppg, 7.1rpg, 1.1spg in 27.9mpg, .446 FG%) is the only rookie power forward to have an impact in the league so far. Other than him, only second-rounder Ron Riley (2.8ppg, 2.6rpg in 10.9mpg, .420 FG%) got a little playing time...
SHOOTING GUARD
Shooting guard is the most loaded spot in the league, but there are no valuable rookies this year. Second-rounder Shandon Anderson (4.3ppg, 3.3rpg in 14.9mpg, .447 FG%) is playing some minutes in a great Bucks team... That's way better than Marcus Brown (2.7ppg, 1.3rpg in 6.5mpg, .341 FG%) who plays terrible basketball in the league worst team.
POINT GUARD
Four point guards are RoY candidates and I had to pass on Stephon Marbury (22.5ppg, 7.9apg, but 5.0topg and a 9-32 team record) and Steve Nash (10.3ppg, 7.3apg, but a 14-27 team record). Allen Iverson (19.4ppg, 5.2rpg, 4.1apg, 2.0spg in 33.5mpg, .470 FG%) is almost having All Star stats and he is an important starter in a great Grizzlies team. Another impressive performance is Kerry Kittles (13.7ppg, 6.7apg, 2.4spg in 32.4mpg, .431 FG%) successfully leading the second best team in the league !
ALL-ROOKIE FIRST TEAM
Tim DUNCAN (Pacers, #1)
Marcus CAMBY (Bulls, #5)
Antawn JAMISON (Lakers, #10)
Shandon ANDERSON (Bucks, #2 of round 2)
Allen IVERSON (Grizzlies, #2)
ALL-ROOKIE SECOND TEAM
Samaki WALKER (76ers, #9)
Antoine WALKER (Lakers, #8)
Ron RILEY (Suns, #1 of round 2)
Marcus BROWN (Knicks, #23)
Kerry KITTLES (Wolves, #12)
The Rookie of the Year ? It's gonna be a point guard. I would vote for Iverson, but Kittles and even Marbury, who appears to be a starter in the rookie/sophomore game, are possible winners.
And last but not least, the All-Defensive Teams. Not a lot to say, most of the time it's only maths, steals/blocks and also rebounds.
CENTER
There's absolutely no doubt about who the best defensive center in the league is : Jong-Hyun Lee (12.3rpg, 4.1bpg, 1.4spg) is 1st in blocks, 7th in rebounds and gets an insane number of steals. For the second spot, it's almost impossible to choose between Dikembe Mutombo (12.4rpg, 3.6bpg, 1.0spg) and Hakeem Olajuwon (12.5rpg, 3.4bpg, 1.3spg). I chose Mutombo. No reason.
POWER FORWARD
Aar will be happy, Beka Burjanadze (7.0rpg, 3.1bpg, 1.5spg) gets to my All-Defensive 1st Team. He's very low on rebounds, but he's the only non center in the league top 10 (8th) in blocks, and gets a lot of steals. LaSalle Thompson (13.3rpg, 2.6bpg), the only non center in the league top 7 (2nd) in rebounds, gets the other spot.
SMALL FORWARD
Charlie Scott (7.3rpg, 2.3bpg, 1.7spg) is still the best. Rick Barry (6.8rpg, 2.1bpg, 1.2spg) gets the other spot based on stats, though he probably can't defend.
SHOOTING GUARD
The two best defensive shooting guards in the league play in the same team ! Of course, one is used as a small forward... Davon Dillard (7.5rpg, 2.1spg, 1.5bpg) is one of the few players who get 1.5bpg and 1.5spg. Latrell Sprewell (6.7rpg, 2.7spgg, 0.6bpg) is 3rd in the league in steals, I choose him over Reggie Miller (5.3rpg, 2.8spg, 0.2bpg) because of the blocks differential.
POINT GUARD
Eddy "I am Charlie" Terrell (6.8rpg, 2.8bpg, 1.7spg) is not really a point guard, but he's fucking huge. Gary Payton (4.8rpg, 2.9spg, 0.2spg) is the best thief in the league.
ALL-DEFENSIVE FIRST TEAM
Dikembe MUTOMBO (Sonics)
Beka BURJANADZE (Wizards)
Charlie SCOTT (Pistons)
Davon DILLARD (Warriors)
Eddy TERRELL (Bucks)
ALL-DEFENSIVE SECOND TEAM
Hakeem OLAJUWON (Raptors)
LaSalle THOMPSON (Blazers)
Rick BARRY (Suns)
Latrell SPREWELL (Warriors)
Gary PAYTON (Nets)
Is it even useful to wonder who is gonna be DPoY ? Lee is.
