It's Lonely at the Top
It seems that this years crop of rookies have been performing pretty exceptionally. The talent this year is infused with quite a bit of guards. With names like Allen Iverson, Stephon Marbury, Steve Nash, Kerry Kittles, Ron Mercer all going in the lotto. Many teams were looking for star power to help boost their teams. Some of these players have been performing exceptionally, while others haven't. Let's not forget the other talent either that is at the top of the draft. Names like Tim Duncan, Marcus Camby, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Peja Stojakovic (even though he isn't in the league yet), Antoine Walker, Samaki Walker, Antawn Jamison and SAR. That's a pretty stacked lotto no matter how you look at it. Every team who picked a player in the lotto, got some form of a talented player to help their roster. I am going to review my top 4 players who are in the running for the Rookie of the Year award.
PG Allen Iverson, Memphis Grizzlies, 2nd overall pick
Projected status: Rookie of the Year
Projected status: Rookie of the Year
Allen Iverson was made the second overall pick in the 2039 NBADSL draft. He was picked up by GM BrazilianDude who already had his bigs in place. Also the fact of not getting Tim Duncan was due to him going first overall. Allen Iverson brings a rare offensive game to this team that seems to have been missing from the point guard spot for awhile. Brazilian saw something that the first GM didn't and he was glad that Iverson had fell into his lap. When given the chance, he made the call to Iverson and told him that he was going to be a Grizzly. Iverson was ecstatic when he got the phone call as he was hoping to go first overall, but at least he didn't drop any further. Iverson give this team a star point guard going forward who is going to be an anchor for years to come. If Brazilian can find a suitor for Pee Wee Kirkland, this will help lay more ground for Iverson to start and make a case for being one of the leagues top point guards already. Iverson needs to work on his passing a little bit more, but he is only 21 years old so he has room to grow.
PG Stephon Marbury, New York Knicks, 3rd overall pick
Projected status: 2nd place
PG Stephon Marbury, New York Knicks, 3rd overall pick
Projected status: 2nd place
GM SuperMaor23 was more than happy to draft Stephon Marbury. With starting off a rebuild, it's always great to have a star at the point running the offense. Stephon Marbury is very similar to Allen Iverson. He has a very solid offensive game that he is putting on display at Madison Square Garden every night. He is currently scoring 23 points per game with 5 rebounds and almost 8 assists. Those numbers are pretty intriguing for only being a rookie. One could argue it's the fact of him not having much talent around him, but in fact the truth is he is just that good. Marbury is looking to be the floor general of this team for the next decade and he hopes that GM Super can put a solid roster around him. His passing needs some work just like Iverson's, but at 19 years old, he still has lots of room to grow as well and improve.
PG Steve Nash, Houston Rockets, 4th overall pick
Projected status: 3rd place
PG Steve Nash, Houston Rockets, 4th overall pick
Projected status: 3rd place
Steve Nash looks like he got the starting nod over quite a few other point guards on the Rockets roster. Nash is not the type of person who will go out and score you 20 points per game like the two above, but he will facilitate the ball properly. Nash came into the draft being the best passer and his numbers have shown that he is no slouch. With 7.4 assists per game and what seems like a high 3.5 turnovers per game, if he can work on his turnovers it would help this team out a lot. Nash is only 20 years old and he will improve over the years. He is the floor general for the Rockets team who seems like they are going to rebuild. This team won quite a handful of games already and hopefully they can rebuild properly. Nash could be looking to average around 9-10 assists per game next season but his GM is going to have to camp him and make sure that he stays focused on his goal.
C Tim Duncan, Indiana Pacers, 1st overall pick
Projected status: 4th place
C Tim Duncan, Indiana Pacers, 1st overall pick
Projected status: 4th place
Tim Duncan seems to have hit the learning curve early. His numbers don't exactly scream all-star just yet, but he has the potential to be one in time. He currently is averaging about 9 points per game and 9 rebounds per game. Tim came out as the best big man in this draft and he was taken with the first pick. The top four picks could have been interchangeable but the Pacers GM preferred Tim over anyone else. Tim has a long way to go before he proves his worth, but he was picked first overall due to long term potential. The Pacers don't seem to be rebuilding so it will give Tim a chance at the playoffs from a very young age. If GM Lakers209 can manage to keep Tim on the right track and camp him for his inside game, he could be one of the best big men in the league.
