This seasons draft seemed to be one of the leagues most hyped. One can say that with confidence because of how many teams did not care to even try for the playoffs in hope off adding a sub 22 year old star to their team.
I am adding a new category, Impact rating. This impact rating is how much the team they are on will be improved because of the player. If a team has no one else besides that rookie it is unlikely that their impact will be felt on the overall record.
1. Indian Pacers- Tim Duncan C 7'0'' 248 20 B C- C B B A
With the first pick of the draft, The Indiana Pacers select Tim Duncan! This was probably the best pick for the team. They had the reigning rookie of the year who was a point guard which would make it easier for this team to go for Duncan then Iverson or Nash. This team really doesn’t have much to work with so as long as the person they pick doesn’t bust then they should be in good shape going forward with some foundation. Tim Duncan is one of the all time great in the real NBA and was also successful in his first go around with this league. Can the pacers GM change their losing culture? We shall see.
Rookie Year projections: 14 points, 9 rebounds, 1.4 blocks per game
Impact rating: B
Grade: A+
2. Memphis Grizzlies- Allen Iverson PG 6'0'' 165 21 B C+ B- B C- A
Not exactly sure why the Jazz wanted to move this pick, but they got a good haul for the number two spot. The grizzlies have been trying to tank for a few seasons, throwing away an opportunity at the ship last season. This was all in desire to give Peewee a young counter part to play with for the next 10 seasons or so. I personally think Iverson is a great compliment to peewee. Iverson and Peewee can both pass the ball, play a real fast pace offense and run an inside or balanced scheme due to the inside scoring and mid range ability. It will be interesting if the addition of Iverson is enough to push Memphis back to the top. It seems that AI will be playing SG and back up PG with Peewee.
Rookie Year Projections: 18 points, 5 assists, 1.5 steals per game
Impact Rating: B+
Grade A-
3. New York Knicks- Stephon Marbury PG 6'2'' 180 19 B- C+ B C D+ A
Young and raw just like super likes his men. Coming into the league at 19 he could be boom or bust. It was controversial to take this player over Nash and Camby however I feel it will be justified in 5 seasons or so. The knicks are going full on rebuild and I feel that they will have nothing much else besides Starbury this season so his stats will be pretty nice. He can score inside and out and pass well. His problem lies with his defense. Is he a bad defender or does he just not care? I do not see the Knicks making any noise this season at all but once Steph comes into his prime they may be ready to do some big things out east.
Rookie Year Projections: 15 points 8 assists 3.5 turnovers per game
Impact Rating: D
Grade: B-
4. Houston Rockets- Steve Nash PG 6'3'' 195 20 C B B+ C D+ A
This guy is my pick for the rookie of the year. He is a guard who can pass the best in the class, score lights out and is on a really bad team. Houston was the worst team in the league last year, but I think with recent additions they will be a hell of a lot better and may even push for a low playoff seed out west if Nash plays up to par. This guy could have gone 1 in this draft and would have been a lock for 1 in many other drafts. We all know Mrclubz was lickin his chops when he saw Nash there at #4.
Rookie Year Projections: 18 points 9 assists 2 turnovers per game
Impact Rating: B+
Grade: A+
5. Chicago Bulls- Marcus Camby PF 6'11'' 220 21 C+ C- C- B+ C+ A
This was in my opinion the last sure pick of the draft. Camby has the NBA body and already is very established in the defensive category. He will be paired down low with Chris Webber which should give the team the best post combo in the league in like 7 seasons. Anyone remember Drob and Nance? From Day 1 Camby will ready to make an impact on the league and even has a shot to make one of the defensive teams.
Rookie Year projections: 9 points 9 rebounds 2.5 blocks per game
Impact Rating: B+
Grade: A-
6. Boston Celtics- Zydrunas Ilgauskas C 7’3 238 20 B- C D+ C+ C+ A
I think this pick would have looked a lot better if Big Z had notes. When you look at his size and seemingly already established inside scoring and potential it seems like a solid pick. I think there was an argument for a few other players here but Beard went with his heart and if Z can turn into a 20-10 big at pick 6 this was a success. For this season I think he will make a big impact because he will fill the center spot on a team that has been building each other spot over the past few seasons. Big Z looks as if he was the missing puzzle piece at the end of the day.
Rookie Year Projections: 13 points 10 rebounds 1 block per game
Impact Rating: A
Grade: B
7. Atlanta Hawks- Peja Stojakovic SF 6'9'' 220 20 C+ B+ D+ C C A
Oh wow! Bannak drafted a white guy what a fucking surprise. Peja is a good pick because he can straight out ball. The guy can shoot and he is also ugly as hell which probably intimidates defenders to some extent. I expected Peja to fall 5 or 6. The problem with him is that he wont come to the league for two seasons since he is playing over seas. If Bannak wants to tank again that makes him the perfect pick, if he needs to win then well shit…
Rookie Year projections: N/A
Impact Rating: F
Grade: A-
Peja holding a trophy that Bannak never will
8. Los Angeles Lakers- Antoine Walker PF 6'9'' 245 20 B- C+ C- C B- A
This is a good pick because notes indicated he was the BPA at the time of the pick. I think the Lakers are going full rebuild and are just looking to add talent and are not as concerned where the player plays on the court just yet. I think walker would be better suited at SF due to his lack of defense and potential growth of an outside shot. I like this pick for the Lakers and I think down the road he will have a successful but not super star career however for his rookie year I feel he may get buried a bit in a tanking rotation and not put up huge stats.
Rookie Year Projections: 7 points, 4 rebounds per game
Impact Rating: D+
Grade: B
"isnt blue the celtics gm"
9. Memphis Grizzlies- Samaki Walker C 6'9'' 258 20 B- C- D- C+ B- A
This pick is probably the most boom or bust out of the top 10. Samaki had pretty good notes however was no more then a fly on the wall in his actual NBA career. When Memphis took him they took him over Antwan Jamison wanting more of a physical big and that’s what they hope to get with him in the paint with KAJ. He is already strong and could use a little more height but as of now he is the starting PF on a team that is looking to make a playoff push. It will be interesting to see if the rookie is ready for the big stage.
Rookie Year Projections: 5 points 9 rebounds 1.5 blocks per game
Impact Rating: C+
Grade: C-
10. Los Angeles Lakers- Antawn Jamison SF 6'9'' 223 20 B- C D+ C+ B- A
Just like their last pick, the Lakers are just stacking talent. I feel Jamison and Walker are very similar in the fact they are softer, outside focus oriented combo forwards. It will be interesting to see where his career plays out. I could definitely see the Lakers GM trading one of them for another position down the road. As a rookie I feel Jamison will have a more successful statistical season then Walker, thus earning a higher impact rating. He is a good scorer and rebounder. A lot of value getting Jamison at this 10 spot
Rookie Year Projections: 12 points, 9 rebounds per game
Impact Rating: B
Grade: B+
11. San Antonio Spurs- Shareef Abdur-Rahim PF 6'9'' 230 19 B- C C C+ C A
This spurs team has lacked direction for the past few seasons but maybe putting an inside scorer like Abdur- Rahim would be the right move to get the most out of the front court next to former DPOTY Sabonis. I do not think he makes the team all that much better since they lost Clyde however I think he has a successful career. His flaw lies in his lack of rebounding so if Sabonis can pick up for that they can be a good one two punch down low.
Rookie Year Projection: 12 points 5 rebounds .3 blocks per game
Impact Rating: D
Grade: C+
12&13 get a combined rating since the wolves picked back to back. The mixture addition of Kittles and Mercer should help the team prepare for the future. After paying some other guys the GM knew he needed to let IT walk, replacing him with Kittles. Mercer should provide nice depth for the team. I think adding both, especially for the price he paid for Kittles should keep the Wolves in contention in the west.
Kittles Rookie Year Projections: 6 points 8 assists, 3 turnovers per game
Mercer Rookie year Projections: 4 points per game 3 rebounds (bench player)
Impact Rating: B+
Grade (Kittles) A-
Grade ( Mercer) C+
