alf the season is gone, if there were mid-season awards, who would be in the All-League teams ? Let's check this out.
CENTER
The only reason why their can be a discussion about the best center in the league is the 76ers record (19-19). Other than that, Shaquille O'Neal (29.5ppg, 13.8rpg, 3.0bpg, .495 FG%) is just HUGE. He's the 3rd scorer in the league (and 1st among bigs) and the 3rd rebounder. There are some competition for the other spots, but Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (20.6ppg, 15.2rpg, 3.4bpg, .451 FG%) looks like the number 2 center. He's the best rebounder in the league, 3rd in block, and was named Player of the Month #3. Bill Walton (20.5ppg, 11.8rpg, 5.3apg, 2.6bpg, .439 FG%, .462 3P%) could easily sneak into the second team, though. His assists number is ridiculous, the Wizards are the best team in the league (35-6) and he's deadly from long range.
POWER FORWARD
There are two close, very close candidates for the first team spot at power forward. Larry Nance (27.1ppg, 11.2rpg, 1.5bpg, .493 FG%) is the 6th scorer in the league, his FG% is great and the Pistons (32-6) are incredible. Zhou Qi (28.2ppg, 11.8rpg, 1.7bpg, .462 FG%, .434 3P%) is a slightly better scorer (4th in the league), rebounder and shot blocker, plus his long range ability is great. But the Hornets are not good enough (21-20). Karl Malone (26.5ppg, 12.1rpg, 4.0apg, 1.5spg, .459 FG%) gets into the third team even though the Mavericks are lame (11-26), because of his amazing numbers. He's 8th in both scoring and rebounds.
SMALL FORWARD
Charlie Scott (22.9ppg, 8.3rpg, 6.2apg, 2.4bpg, 1.8spg, .486 FG%, .402 3P%) is not the best scoring SF in the league, but nobody would argue he's the number 1 at this position. He's doing almost everything, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, was named Player of the Month #2, is efficient for behing the arc and is the main reason for the great Pistons season. Rick Barry (27.0ppg, 6.0apg, 1.8spg,
.494 FG%, .424 3P%) is still one of the best scorers in the league, he would be 7th if he played enough games and he's deadly from long range. Stanley Johnson (25.8ppg, 10.8rpg, 3.5apg, .451 FG%) is mostly a huge rebounder and a great team player.
SHOOTING GUARD
Kobe Paras (29.8ppg, 7.1rpg, 5.9apg, .449 FG%, .412 3P%) and Jalek Felton (30.0ppg, 6.3rpg, 4.5apg, 1.9spg, .529 FG%) are the two best scorers in the league. Paras is a better rebounder and playmaker (also he only loses 1.9 balls a game), and most of all the Wizards are the best team out there. Felton is a better overall scorer, though : he has the third best FG% in the league, and was named Player of the Month #1. The shooting guard spot is loaded with talent but Michael Jordan (27.2ppg, 5.9rpg, 2.4spg, .508 FG%, .476 3P%) is clearly the number 3 : 5th in scoring, 3rd in steals, 7th in FG%, 6th in 3P% and the Raptors are doing great (26-10).
POINT GUARD
Deux point guards are way above the rest of the league : Ty Hudson (26.4ppg, 8.2apg, 1.5spg, .456 FG%) and John Stockton (20.3ppg, 11.6apg, 2.1spg, .469 FG%, .431 FG%). Hudson is a great scorer, 10th in the league, also a nice playmaker (only 1.8topg). Stockton is by far the best passer in the league, also a near top ten in steals, and a nice shooter. Both of their teams have a nice season : the Bucks are at 22-12 and the Blazers at 29-14. It's almost impossible to choose between them, but let's go with Ty. Isiah Thomas (23.8ppg, 7.8apg, 2.6spg, .433 FG%) is the third man. He's number 1 in the league in steals and a great scorer, in a good Wolves pack (24-16).
ALL-LEAGUE FIRST TEAM
Shaquille O'NEAL (76ers)
Larry NANCE (Pistons)
Charlie SCOTT (Pistons)
Kobe PARAS (Wizards)
Ty HUDSON (Bucks)
ALL-LEAGUE SECOND TEAM
Kareem ABDUL-JABBAR (Warriors)
Zhou QI (Hornets)
Rick BARRY (Suns)
Jalek FELTON (Suns)
John STOCKTON (Blazers)
ALL-LEAGUE THIRD TEAM
Bill WALTON (Wizards)
Karl MALONE (Mavericks)
Stanley JOHNSON (Wizards)
Michaal JORDAN (Raptors)
Isiah THOMAS (Wolves)
And who would be the MVP ? Nance, Scott and Paras could all three get the award. Maybe Paras is the favourite because he's the only Wizards player and I can't decide who is the best Pistons player, Nance or Scott. But I feel Scott deserves it because he changed everything in Detroit. Also FBB loves point guards so Stockton and Hudson are definitely in the discussion, and Felton would get some
consideration if the Suns improve their record.
After the All-League teams, let's check out the All-Rookie teams
CENTER
Only one rookie center has an impact on the league this year : Ben Wallace (4.9ppg, 9.5rpg, 2.8bpg in 26.8mpg, .385 FG%). Big Ben is already a top defensive center, and if he played 36 minutes he would average 12.8 rebounds and 3.8 blocks ! Of course, don't expect anything from him on offense or on the free throw line (.376 FT%). The other interesting rookie center is a steal : Constantin Popa (3.8ppg, 3.5rpg, 0.9bpg in 14.6mpg, .439 FG%, .500 3P%), drafted at 26 and back-up center in the 29-14 Blazers. It's probably the highest point of Popa NBA career, but who knows ?
POWER FORWARD
The lame Celtics (13-28) are a perfect team for a rookie like Kurt Thomas (17.9ppg, 9.4rpg in 29.7mpg, .402 FG%) to show his talents. He's a nice scorer, though his percentage could be a lot better, and a great rebounder. Not a shot blocker, but already a capable defender and a 1.0spg player. Antonio McDyess (11.7ppg, 6.2rpg, 1.6bpg in 27.0mpg, .406 FG%) is a bit less NBA-ready, and does not show the same offensive promises even in the 9-36 Rockets, but he's already a good shot blocker.
SMALL FORWARD
The best rookie small forward may be Jerry Stackhouse but he's not playing in the 26-10 Raptors. So the best one this year seems to be... Ed O'Bannon (8.3ppg, 3.7rpg in 23.0mpg, .428 FG%) and that's not saying a lot. But O'Bannon is a starter in the 20-24 Jazz and if he played 36 minutes he would average 13.0ppg, so that's a good first season for him. Michael Finley (3.9ppg, 2.0rpg in 15.0mpg, .492 FG%, .545 3P%) is a typical shooter : great percentages, especially from long range and on the free throw line (.933 FT%), but not a lot of points. He's one of the top prospects in this class tough.
SHOOTING GUARD
Another typical shooter is Ray Allen (12.5ppg, 3.6apg, 1.2spg in 33.5mpg, .437 FG%, .436 3P%) : not a great scorer for now, but a capable one, and with acceptable percentages. He will need to upgrade his inside capabilities to be a star tough. Also, he's the only interesting rookie shooting guard in this class. Another semi-interesting one is Bob Sura (6.3ppg, 2.0apg, 0.9spg in 21.9mpg, .430 FG%, .426 3P%), another shooter playing quality minutes in the 8-29 Clippers. Drafted at 20, Sura looks like a semi-steal.
POINT GUARD
That's somehow a surprise, but the best rookie point guard is by far Damon Stoudamire (19.6ppg, 9.4apg, 1.6spg in 36.3mpg, .440 FG%, .456 3P%). Stoudamire leads the rookies in scoring, assists and steals, he's also 4th in the league in passing and a near top ten in 3P%. Plus he's the best player in the 14-25 Pacers. Jason Kidd (13.7ppg, 5.5apg, 1.5spg in 29.8mpg, .462 FG%) was the first choice in the draft and is a small disappointment. His playmaking is horrible (3.7topg, 1.5 A/T ratio), but his scoring is maybe better than expected. He's a top defensive player, and probably the only one with Ben Wallace in this class.
ALL-ROOKIE FIRST TEAM
Ben WALLACE (Grizzlies, #7)
Kurt THOMAS (Celtics, #13)
Ed O'BANNON (Jazz, #8)
Ray ALLEN (Celtics, #2)
Damon STOUDAMIRE (Pacers, #6)
ALL-ROOKIE SECOND TEAM
Constantin POPA (Blazers, #26)
Antonio McDYESS (Rockets, #4)
Michael FINLEY (Mavericks, #5)
Bob SURA (Clippers, #20)
Jason KIDD (Clippers, #1)
And the Rookie of the Year ? Well it's FBB so Stoudamire almost already won it, and he completely deserves it. Thomas and Simmons are candidates too, but any other player than Stoudamire would be a big surprise.
And last but not least, the All-Defensive Teams. Not a lot to say, most of the time it's only maths, steals/blocks and also rebounds.
CENTER
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (15.3rpg, 3.4bpg, 1.1spg) is the best rebounder and shot blocker in the league. No discussion. A lot of possibilities for the second team, but I like Hakeem Olajuwon (12.0rpg, 3.2bpg, 1.5spg).
Not an easy choice between LaSalle Thompson (14.5rpg, 2.8bpg, 0.9spg) and sophomore Dale Davis (9.5rpg, 3.4bpg, 1.0bpg), but I decided to value rebounds. And team results.
SMALL FORWARD
Charlie Scott (8.5rpg, 2.5bpg, 1.9spg) is way above any other small forward. He's the only player in the league close to average 2 steals and 2 blocks a game. Not a lot of possibilitues for the second team, so I chose James Worthy (7.0rpg, 1.6bpg, 1.1spg).
SHOOTING GUARD
Michael Jordan (6.0rpg, 2.6spg, 0.4bpg) is 2nd in the league in steals and a great rebounder for the SG spot. Jamaal Wilkes (4.4rpg, 2.4spg, 0.4bpg) is 4th in the league in steals, they are the only two non-PG in the top 7.
POINT GUARD
I don't know which position is Eddy Terrell (6.1rpg, 3.0bpg, 1.7spg) currently playing but he's a point guard according to FBB. And those numbers ?? Ridiculous. Also, Isiah Thomas (3.6rpg, 2.7spg, 0.2bpg) is the best player in the league when it comes to steals.
ALL-DEFENSIVE FIRST TEAM
Kareem ABDUL-JABBAR (Warriors)
LaSalle THOMPSON (Blazers)
Charlie SCOTT (Pistons)
Michael JORDAN (Raptors)
Eddy TERRELL (Bucks)
ALL-DEFENSIVE SECOND TEAM
Hakeem OLAJUWON (Raptors)
Dale DAVIS (Celtics)
James WORTHY (Raptors)
Jamaal WILKES (Blazers)
Isiah THOMAS (Wolves)
And the DPoY ? Well FBB always gives the award to big men, so I'd say KAJ. Even if it would be his first defensive award since 2030 ! I would give it to Eddy Terrell, but it depends where he really plays...
CENTER
The only reason why their can be a discussion about the best center in the league is the 76ers record (19-19). Other than that, Shaquille O'Neal (29.5ppg, 13.8rpg, 3.0bpg, .495 FG%) is just HUGE.
