It has been a while since power rankings were done. After last year, where the eastern conference was as good as ever with the Cavs winning it all, the Bulls boasting the best record and a super team like the Magic coming up short(y) due to a devastating injury to their best player Wilt. This season we are about to get things going after a preseason with a few changes to keep in mind. The top things to watch out for are the new Gm of Magic and Pacers. Welcome to Flip and jimmy , the Contract Year of the Knicks and the entrance to the league’s next great…SHAQ
1. The Chicago Bulls come in at number one in my power ranking. Despite finishing third in preseason which may or may not mean anything I feel the bulls have the strongest roster. They are led by power house center David Robinson who is finally coming to form. Last year they had two stuggles, the first half of the year they had no reliable SG and they solved that by acquiring Aguire. The second problem was the lack of PG. I think the addition of FAT could be the right move to be a rotational complement to Jimmy Walker. PG rotations do not always work but with a full year of two of the best defenders in the league of Charlie Scott and Drob plus solid all around player Larry Nance and the scoring wing Mark Aguire I have some faith in this team.
2. The Second team is the Toronto Raptors. Tyfreak has done a good job developing Pippen and Miller. Pippen has finally taken the step to be one of the top players in the league with a near 30-10 preseason at SF. His defense is nothing to laugh about either. Miller and Pippen complement each other really well and with Cousey having a good TC at 29 the raptors have the most fearsome perimeter in the league. Hopefully for TY the bigman spots can be manned by role players Antwan Webber and Robert Parish who are seemingly going to be able to do an adiquite job. Too bad Parish and McHale are not going to play with eachother like they once did in Boston.
3. Based on preseason this 3 spot is up for grabs but I give it to the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavs have arguably the leagues best big man in Kareem along with the cheatcode in Tyonne Malone. He may have had a decline in TC but I don’t believe the preseason stats until I see some constant drop off. He has added ben simmons on an MLE and another year under Mark Price’s belt could possibly help the Cavs defend their title. Coming this summer (or next week when the season ends).
4. A lot of these teams seem to be on the downswing but the Orlando Magic still have the talent. I am not sure what the new GM plans to do with this team but they were able to maintain almost their entire squad from last year with IT and Stanley resigning. After a medicore preseason which is highlighted by poor defense this team needs Karl Malone to start playing more like Moses did last year and they will be in good shape. Its probably only a matter of time before SJ takes this league by storm and if he does any of that this year it will be interesting in Orlando
5. Uhh 5? I guess the Detroit Pistons comein at 5. His roster is not sexy, as always. The two best players are both best at SF in Alvin Adams and Cliff Robinson. If one can be productive down low next to block machine Jung Lee the team could find some success. They have decent wings in Teagle and I guess they have Jonny Moore at starting Pg with young gun Dominican prospect Jorge Gonzales waiting in the looms. This team can prob finish 5-7 seed but probably not make a run at the title.
6. The Brooklyn Nets are coming in next. They have the reigning MVP in Magic, a great PF in Charles Barkley and a once legend VJ King as their big three. You can not discredit tree rollins who is still holding down the paint and enforcing when needed. This team has little flexibility it seems to make moves but they could use an upgrade at SG/SF or where ever VJ king is not. The could be a nice underdog to root for come playoffs and with star power like Magic and Charles they may make a run.
7. The Atlanta Hawks are the seventh best team. The white power movement has taken a step back. Led by Dan Issel who’s play has declined the torch has been passed to the teams leading scorer Kiki Vendeweghe which is probably one of the most interesting names I have seen. If Dr. J could take his fro out of his ass and play some basketball this team would have a great core at the 2/3/4 positions with Elmore holding down center on a great contract and some random guy (not the gm) playing PG. an upgrade at PG could help but he only has 5 mil space to do it.
8. The Boston Celtics are next, they had a horrible preseason but its pretty hard to over look their best two players not actually playing. It seems Ellison was the right add to fill the void that was left since Ayton has departed, although the Celtics probably wish he could block more. Adding Pistol and Vandy back in the line up should at least get these guys into the playoffs if he wants to be.
