Although we're only sure of one of the players to be selected in the upcoming amateur draft, we probably already know who the first pick will be: Hakeem Olajuwon, deemed "The Dream," he brings promises of championships for his future teammates. Lets take a look at who has the best chance at running down their DREAM.
At 4-16, the Cleveland Cavaliers have started slow enough to have the best odds at landing the Dream. Currently, they don't have much. They've lost a lot through Free Agency and will have to rebuild thoroughly through the draft. They've basically only got Ralph Sampson and Egemen Guven looking like much, but adding the Dream might make that the DREAM front court for future years.
Even with the additions of Trey Mourning, Elfrid Payton and Detlef Schrempf and the development of guys like Admon Gilder and Derek Funderburk, the New York Knicks find themslves struggling to out together wins. I don't know if Funderburk will ever be able to be a decent backup for a serious contender even with obsessivr camping and I think Detlef will be best utilized at SF next to Gilder, so fitting Hakeem next to Mourning and hoping Keifer Sykes develops into a nice starter sounds pretty DREAMY to me...
Bill Laimbeer is a backup and Isaiah Hicks could likely leave this offseason(as if he can block shots either). Partner that with the fact that their pick is owed to Orlando unless it lands top 6, the Minnesota Timberwolves are DREAMING of landing Olajuwon and either commit to the tank next season or go out and get a ring while Seventh Woods is still producing.
The fact that nobody is blocking shots may be one of the main reasons why the talented Phoenix Suns have their fingers crossed less than a year removed from letting MJ go. I think the Suns need to move their talent and commit to running down their DREAM because I really don't see much for them to build around that's worth sacrificing the opportunity to land a player like Hakeem. TANK HARDER
Tiny Archibald is playing nice in his new home, but the San Antonio Spurs aren't far from a battle with a contract year and if he really thinks Austin Wiley and Tom Chambers can be playing 50 minutes combined, Guins is definitely going to land Hakeem or the next few years are going to be a nightmare.
With De'Ron Davis and Cliff Robinson expiring this offseason, it looks like the full tank begins next season for the Denver Nuggets. All that remains are the slowly-but-surely developing Jeff Malone and Bob Love who might be a nice surrounding support to begin the post-Bird era in Denver. Malone and Hakeem should be a nasty inside combo, one Springs probably DREAMS about.
The Houston Rockets are next in line, but I'm pretty sure they've got a different dream. A #1 pick for Houston may be chriskamanyourmom's dream though.
