Reminiscent of the cult sensation, Too Many Cooks, or of a more conventional series such as The Brady Bunch, we have the Johnson family on the Brooklyn Nets to look to for some good humor this season. Now for the casual basketball observer, one may ask, "What is this malarkey that you speak of?". Well this season the Nets have not one, not two, not three... well you get the point, they have six players with the last name Johnson on their roster this season. There is Kevin, Eddie, Dennis, Stanley, Gus, and of course the new town hero, Magic. Now granted, when something like this pops up, there are some questions that must be asked. To answer some questions, Brooklyn Nets General Manager, LakersGM1, elaborated on the issue in the New York Post:
"On the whole Johnson issue, it is something that just kind of happened. It was funny to be honest because Kevin, long time Net star, (In relation to the experience on the Nets of the other players on the team) came up to me after the Magic Johnson trade for both Magic and Gus (Johnson) asking if I was trying to create some version of the Johnson family. I laughed it off at first, but after the whole signing of Dennis it became clear we could turn this into something special. Andrew (Wiggins) even wanted to be part of the fun, so I got in touch with the marketing department and Janauary 26th will be the Johnson Family Reunion. Stay tuned for the details, it is sure to be a real riot."
Details have slowly emerged on the event. Fans will be able to submit fan-made videos depicting the Johnson clan, whether comparing them to some of the old classic family sitcoms, creating family reunions shots, specialty music or parodies of songs, and much more. The whole night will start as the fans get into the stands with doctored photos of the Johnson family vacations and will lead to the introduction of the extended Johnson clan with all members of the Brooklyn Nets wearing Johnson on their back. It should be a night that would make would put a minor league hilarious promotion to shame. The Nets have been no stranger to such promotional nights, such as the Celebrity Look-A-Like Showcase where fans would try to emulate the stars of yesterday and today to win free prizes and discounted food, drink, and merchandise. They also were to host an event to make fun of the jailed New York Former US Senator Chelsea Clinton due to her convicted date rape of one of her male secretaries. The event was cancelled after several potential lawsuits arose.
As Magic and Kevin come back from their injuries, it is time for the Johnson boys and the rest of the team to prepare for the memorable event that should be in store. Keep in mind though, the number of Johnsons' left on the team by the start of the event might be in question due to the fact the Nets are always very active in trade talks. Most notably, Stanley Johnson has been rumored to be on the move due to the issue of depth and talent at the power forward and shooting guard positions for the team. For his rookie season, Stanley has be working hard out of position at power forward as Kevin McHale, who missed all by 5 games last season with a torn ACL injury, comes off the bench. Another Johnson who has always been subject to multiple trade rumors is the most tenured member of the clan, Kevin Johnson. Kevin for the last two seasons with the team has been playing most of his time at the shooting guard position instead of his usual role at the point due to both Magic Johnson and former Net Trae Young. Although he has been playing out of position, Kevin has been chipper all year saying, "This is why I play the game. I am always looking for new challenges to put my game to the next level. While the two spot was new to me in the NBADSL, it is clear I can play it and I will do whatever it takes to excel regardless of what the naysayers say." Even though Kevin is very confident in his play, it will be up to the front office to determine his fate. As for the other three Johnsons, Gus, Dennis, and Eddie, anything could happen with them from being cut, traded, to staying with the team for the duration of the year.
In anticipation of the event and the desire for a national network to broadcast the surely comical night, ESPN has decided to cancel the Knicks game that was previously scheduled to air the game from Brooklyn. While their rivalry may make tempers flare from the Knicks fan base, it is clear to the nation that this was a needed change. The New York Knicks are currently the worst team in the league posting a 6-34 record in the bunch. It appears national networks such has ESPN, ABC, and TNT have been looking for ways to get out of their previous agreements to broadcast Knicks basketball. Though Knick fans have the right to be upset, they still can watch the poor product that is being put on the court on MSG.
