The tank has been on for a while now. Starting with this offseason, teams have dumped their players for cap space and picks with the hope that this upcoming draft will be bountiful. It looks like bundybastard made it worth it. The rumor mill has leaked 3 elite names that will be available this upcoming draft. They are the man on the NBA logo himself, Jerry West, the only man to score 100 points in a NBA game, Wilt Chamberlain, and the only player to ever average a triple double for a season, the Big O. Who should go first? Will any of them bust?
I'm here to give you my input.
Jerry West
With FBB, the point guard is king. It is much easier to rebuild if you have an elite point guard to build around. Just ask entrapy and the hardware Kyrie provided him after dumping LeBron and Dwight. Jerry West is the prototypical scoring point guard. He averaged under 20 ppg only once in his career (his rookie year) and finished his career averaging 27 ppg. On top of that, his career fg% was 47.4%. That’s remarkable for a guard. West is no slouch either when it comes to areas of the game besides scoring. He averaged a healthy 6.7 assists in his career and 5.8 boards. Steals were not accounted for until the 1973-1974, which was West’s last. With him being able to average 2.6 steals that year, it is safe to assume he averaged more than that a few seasons before when he was younger and had fresher legs. No one is ever a sure thing in this league, but West seems to at worst be a 20 ppg scorer with efficient %’s, and at best Kyrie Irving 2.0.
Wilt Chamberlain
There’s no reason to throw Wilt’s stats at you. We have all read or heard about his dominance and ability to completely take over games. The one knack on him was his drive. Many questioned his drive to win and believe he actually underachieved after his career was all said and done. Wilt made the best use of his celebrity, infamously claiming to have slept with tens of thousands of women. Luckily for any FBB owner, they will not have to worry about Wilt’s off court lifestyle affecting his play. There is no attribute for will to win or desire (not that I know of any way…). With the league seeing just how dominant Joel Embiid has become, it’s fair to wonder if this will sway the league to see Wilt as someone they can truly build around. In a league dominated by guards, Wilt may be one of the few big men who is worth building around. It will be interesting to see his skills. He played at a time when his height was essentially unrivaled. In a league full of athletic 7 footers, it’s fair to wonder if he will still be dominant.
Oscar Robertson
When people compare LeBron to all-time greats, it’s usually MJ or Magic. They see LeBron resembling those two players the most. I disagree and believe Oscar Robertson is the closest comparison of LeBron. A 6’7 point guard who could score, rebound, and assist at will, Oscar Robertson is best known for averaging a triple double one season. (Granted, the pace and attempted shots back then was much higher than it is in the modern era.) Oscar Robertson possesses height, athleticism, and a high basketball IQ. It’s almost unfair that he is able to play the PG position with FBB’s obsession with PGs. Oscar Robertson has the potential to be a top 3 player in this league because of his all-around game, height, and eligibility to play the PG position.
This is going to be a 3 man draft if the rumors are true. Woe is the person who drafts 4. You really can’t go wrong with any of these guys, but if I had the first pick I’m taking Robertson. I just can’t pass up that height and ability at the PG position. These 3 players will make immediate impacts on the league and whoever gets them will look like geniuses for tanking so damn hard.
1. Oscar Robertson
2. West
3. Wilt (Biggest risk imo)
