Draft time is an exciting part of the offseason. From the lotto until the beginning of the draft, teams in the beginning of the draft wonder who will drop to them, and which one of these players will be the best over time. Drafting in this league is interesting, especially during the years of the NCEA, where numbers of former real life busts were becoming impact players, and other unheard of's have become household names.
Here is a look at what the 2008 Draft 1st round looked like:
1. Wolves - Derrick Rose
2. Knicks - Kevin Love
3. Clippers - Ty Lawson via List
4. 76ers - Brook Lopez
5. Wolves - Michael Beasley
6. Pistons - George Hill
7. Hawks - Roy Hibbert
8. Wizards - Nicolas Batum
9. Bucks - Serge Ibaka
10. Nets - Eric Gordon
11. Suns - Danilo Gallinari
12. Kings - JaVale McGee
13. Lakers - OJ Mayo
14. Bulls (Via Cavs) - Anthony Randolph
15. Suns (Via Bobcats)- Donte Greene
16. Trailblazers - Kosta Koufos
17. Magic (Via Hawks)- Terrence Williams
18. Clippers - Omer Asik
19. Philadelphia 76ers - Mario Chalmers
20. Lakers (Via Warriors)- Nicola Pecovic
21. Pacers (Via Timberwolves)- Robin Lopez
22. Wizards (Via Magic)- Jerryd Bayless
23. Warriors (Via Pacers)- Courtney Lee
24. Bobcats (Via Lakers) - Ryan Anderson
25. Bucks - JJ Hickson
26. Grizzlies - D.J Augustin
27. 76ers (Via Bucks)- Luc Mbah a Moute
28. Raptors (Via Rockets)- Jason Thompson
29. Bobcats - Joe Crawford
This was a very solid draft, that produced a couple of superstars along with some very solid role players. Many teams in the front end of the draft may have gone a different way with it if they had known what the future had held for some of these guys..
The 2008 NBA Lotto Re Draft
1. Wolves - Derrick Rose
D Rose was a can't miss type, and he didn't miss a beat. He is easily a top 3 PG in the league, and could argue for the best player in the league. He made an immediate impact, and continues to now. Nothing to nitpick here, obvious choice at #1
2008 Rookie Stats: 13.4PPG, 5.8APG, 4.5RBG, 1.1 SPG, .451FG%
2013 Stats: 21.8PPG, 9.2APG, 5.3RBG, 1.9SPG, .477FG%
2. Knicks - Kevin Love
Nothing new in the top 2, Love was expected to to be a beast, and that's exactly what he is. Scorer, passer, defender, rebounder. Love does it all and he does it all well. If DRose wasn't in this draft Love would be a no brainer at number 1.
2008 Rookie Stats: 14.3PPG, 8.3RPG, 3.0APG, .7 BPG, .430FG%
2013 Stats: 20PPG, 11.1RPG, 3.2APG, 1.8 BPG, .442FG%
3. Clippers - Serge Ibaka
Our first switch up in the ReDraft, the Clippers chose Ty Lawson with this pick, and while he has turned into a good player, Ibaka is an absolute animal. Already has become a top tier shot blocker in the league, and already has 2 DPOY's to show for it. His offensive game is still developing, but is more than capable of holding his own on that end of the floor as well.
2008 Rookie Stats: 11.3PPG, 8.4RPG, 1.5APG, 1.7BPG, .425FG%
2013 Stats: 11PPG, 10.2RPG, 1.8APG, 3.3BPG, .376FG%
4. 76ers - Brook Lopez
Lopez appears to be taken in a good spot. One of the better interior scorers in the league, if his defense was a bit more developed he probably could jump over Ibaka for the 3rd best player in the draft, though it is much improved since entering the league. His game is offense though, and he has dominated the paint throughout his career so far.
2008 Rookie Stats: 18.4PPG, 7.9RPG, 3.3APG, 1.3BPG, .462FG%
2013 Stats: 22.1PPG, 9.9RPG, 2.5APG, 2.9BPG, .458FG%
5. Wolves - Danilo Gallinari
After nailing the obvious pick at #1 in the draft, the Wolves took a chance on Michael Beasley at this spot. Beasley has just flat not panned out, which is unfortunate for the wolves as there are still a number of player left on the board who have had good careers. Gallinari would have been the right pick, and is also a SF. Imagine if he was on the Wolves alongside DRose all this time? Oh what could have been. Gallinari has turned into a pretty big steal going at pick 11 to the Suns. Guy is a chucker.
2008 Rookie Stats: 3.5PPG, 2.6RPG, .5APG, .6SPG, .414FG%
2013 Stats: 23.9PPG, 6.4RPG, 3.9APG, 1.8SPG, .472FG%
6. Pistons - Ty Lawson
The Pistons made a pretty questionable pick here by taking George Hill @ #6. Hill has turned out to be a decent role player type, maybe a starter on an average kind of team, but is nothing special. In the redraft, Ty Lawson falls to them at 6, who is a significant upgrade over Hill. Lawson has had a steady career, and though maybe not at the very top tier of PG's in the league, he will consistently deliver above average production year after year.
2008 Rookie Stats: 19.2PPG, 6.7APG, 5.1RPG, 1.8SPG, .428FG%
2013 Stats: 15.6PPG, 5.7APG, 5.7RPG, 1.8SPG, .438FG%
7. Hawks - Anthony Randolph
Randolph is one of the bigger jumpers of the redraft. Slid all the way to 14 to the Bulls, but over the years many GM's regretted not taking him sooner, myself included at #13. Randolph has had a solid career thus far. Never been a big time scorer, but has been surrounded by scoring much of his career in Chicago. He has made a name for himself both defensively and on the glass, as well as being a good passer and low TO guy.
2008 Rookie Stats: 8.8PPG, 6.4RPG, 1.7APG, 1.3BPG, .459FG%
2013 Stats: 10.8PPG, 9.8RPG, 1.9APG, 1.9BPG, .447FG%
8. Wizards - Roy Hibbert
Hibbert is an interesting player. Many probably expected a bit more from him on the defensive end as he has never really progressed into an elite shot blocker like Ibaka, and his offense never really progressed in the way Brook Lopez did. He is fairly similar to Randolph stats wise, a bit better of a scorer in the post but overall I like Randolphs game a little better.
2008 Rookie Stats: 19.2PPG, 8.1RPG, 3.0APG, 1.7BPG, .441FG%
2013 Stats: 10.9PPG, 9.4RPG, 2.4APG, 1.4BPG, .431FG%
9. Bucks - Nic Batum
Fresh out of the draft Batum looked like a complete stud. Had great ratings and performance early in the career, and while still a solid player production began to dip a bit. Still an above average scorer, and very good defender. Turned out to be a very good pick.
2008 Rookie Stats: 21.6PPG, 6.5RPG, 2.4APG, 1.5SPG, .442FG%
2013 Stats: 20.8PPG, 7.5RPG, 1.5APG, 1.6SPG, .452FG%
The Top 9 players from this draft have all turned into either Star-Caliber players, or just a tier under that. Very Solid top of the class, and not to many missed picks this high up. Not necessarily same order, but most of these guys were all drafted at least in the Lotto, with the exception of Randolph at #14. From here there is a bit of a talent drop off, and picks 10-13 could go a couple of ways. For the remainder of the Lotto Redraft, picks 10-13, I compiled a list of a few guys could slide into these spots to close out the Lotto. Much less to say about these guys, as they have not had nearly the careers of the rest of star level guys. My lotto closes out as
10. Nets- JJ Hickson
11. Suns- Javale McGee
12. Kings- George Hill
13. Lakers- Jason Thompson
Honorable Mentions: DJ Augastine, Eric Gordon, Robin Lopez, Terrance Williams
Agree or Disagree? I'd love to hear it.
