Welcome to X-Factor NBADSL East edition! Here we take a look at the best benches in the East, scoring wise.
How did I compute these numbers? Since players’ MPG don't always add up correctly (48 MPG per position), I adjusted the PPG of every bench players accordingly. Before doing so, I grouped the players into three categories: point guards, wings, big men. The groupings will be used in the formula below:
• Point Guards: Bench PG PPG*[(48-Starter PG MPG)/Bench PG MPG]
• Wings/Big Men: Bench Wing/Big Men PPG*[(96-Starter Wing/Big Men MPG)/Bench Wing/Big Men MPG]
Upon obtaining the numbers needed, I divided the total bench ppg by team total ppg to take into account a team’s pace. I then ranked the teams using this statistic.
Note: By no means are these numbers perfect. Some stats are skewed by trades, injuries forcing bench players to start (or to play) (i.e. Bulls), wings playing back up PF (i.e. Thaddeus Young plays PF for the Nets but is listed as SF), etc. I did make special adjustments. Pardon any error in my calculations.
Without further ado,
Presenting the Top 3 Benches in the Eastern Conference
1. Charlotte Hornets (itnas123)
The Hornets absolutely ran away with this one with 1/3 of their scoring coming from their bench. Millsap, who I considered a bench player despite starting for the Bobcats in the first part of the young season, is their MVBP (Most Valuable Bench Player). Millsap averaged an adjusted 8 PPG off the bench for the Hornets. Congratulations Millsap!
2. Milwaukee Bucks (thecommish)
About 3% behind the Bobcats are the Milwaukee Bucks. Leading the bench mob is J.J. Hickson averaging an adjusted 8.29 PPG which is 30% of the total adjusted PPG of their bench. Coincidentally, the bench also scores 30% of their team's points every game.
3. Indiana Pacers (malice)
Coming in at number 3 and breaking the streak of bad teams are the Indiana Pacers. After a devastating FA, the Pacers have been on a mission to prove that you don't have to have a great starting lineup to be one of the best teams in the league as they are currently second in the East in terms of winning percentage. Deshawn Stevenson leads the charge averaging an adjusted 6.8 PPG.
Congratulations to the Top 3 benches!
Moving along, here are three teams who may have to start looking for help to aid their struggling bench. (I hate to do this but shorty is atop the list!)
1. Orlando Magic (shorty)
The Magic have one of the most explosive starting lineup in the entire league. And this set of players are certainly earning their paychecks, leading this team to the 5th seed despite the obvious lack of help off the bench (14 PPG adjusted, 14% of the team's average, a bit north 5% behind the Heat and almost 20% behind Charlotte). IF shorty can find help somewhere, I'm sure he has the GM skills to do so, then the Magic can certainly rocket up the standings once again. Watch out!
PS. Of course, I was kidding when I said I did it because of this team. The article was just too short for my liking.
2. Miami Heat (wassabi)
Oh how the might has fallen. Maybe it's not the team, maybe it's the inactivity of the GM but this team needs help badly as they currently sit 10th in the East. The chuck is gone. Lewis is struggling and so is the bench. West has been good but everyone else is terrible (Giriceck maybe averaging 8 PPG but that is in 30 minutes of play). Nothing more to say tbh.
3. Atlanta Hawks (shard24)
Like the Magic, they have great scorers in the starting line up and none off the bench. Shard has been making moves but they still obviously lack that scoring punch off the bench. Maybe Billups can be that guy. We just have to wait and see. For now, the Hawks are doing well and they are certainly enjoying the success that has eluded them for the past few seasons.
As a closing remark, I would like to congratulate once again the best benches in the league. The bottom 3 teams have amazing GMs, wassabi is one when active, and they can certainly turn things around.
