2040 was one of the best Free Agency classes in recent memory, lots of moving players and big contracts. However this list doesn't include any resignings or max deals.
Top 5 Free Agency Signings:
5. 2040 183 Knicks (super) Sign PF LaSalle Thompson for $39,720,000 over 3 years.
Pretty good haul for the 34 year old Thompson. Still a tremendously productive player, and signed for $12 million with 10% increases over 3 years is quite the bargain. Filled a need for Super and his Wolves, easily one of the better signings this offseason. What’s most surprising is that this was a Day 3 signing, I figured LaSalle would go Day 1/2..
4. 2040 183 Magic (Flip) Sign C Sam Bowie for $29,790,000 over 3 years.
Bowie gets the nod over Thompson because of age. Production is similar, Bowie with 17/13/1.5 blocks and Thompson with 19/14/1 block. Bowie only being off by one rebound and essentially one basket. Flip saves 10 million over the course of the contract and doesn’t have to worry about an aging star’s upcoming TC’s *see VJ King’s -4 TC at age 33
3. 2040 184 Rockets (mrclubz) Sign PG Xavier Simpson for $23,205,000 over 4 years.
Simpson has always been a backup but seems as though he might’ve found his niche in Houston. His +2 TC, +1 outside and +1 defense, make him look like a potential starter with C A- A- B D+ ratings. Could easily be starting over Nash who is just C A- B+ C+ C-. But lets get to production: 612 Xavier Simpson PG 6 18.8 8.5 2.5 5.8 1.7 0.2 0.5 .500 .667 .500 those are pretty good numbers for a backup, and are a big reason for the Rockets 6-0 start.
2. 2040 183 Supersonics (SRG) Sign PG Terrell Brandon for $41,769,000 over 4 years.
Terrell Brandon could be one of the biggest steals this FA. For just a little over $10 million per SRG gets a good and young PG for his team. I know I was targeting him for an S&T than rookie camping him out when Mouth declined his resigning. A +3 TC, +1 handles, +1 defense, +1 rebounding, it’s scary to think what he would’ve been like with a good Mentor and NBA Rookie camps. His numbers now aren’t impressive but for $9 million per with 10% increases, it’s worth the wait. Even scarier to think he resigned for $61,299,084 over 5 years, essentially $2 million more per year + the 5th year base of $10 million.
1. 2040 183 Rockets (mrclubz) Sign SF Damyean Dotson for $13,923,000 over 4 years.
I know what you’re thinking.. who the fuck? But yes, this guy is the best signing of 2040 Free Agency. Over a small sample size of 6 games, he’s averaging 5 PPG, 5 RPG, and 2 SPG in 27 minutes, while having FG, FT, and 3PT percentages of 62%, 80%, and 43%. The numbers might not mean much, but his A- defense on the wing is likely a top reasons for the Rockets allowing 92 OPPG.. $3 milliion per with 10% increases for a 25 year old? Clubz might’ve just found a better Bol Bol, and everyone knows how integral Bol Bol’s defense was the winning of three championships. A Bol Bol that can produce a handful of points, boards, and a couple steals would be scary on any championship run.
Top 3 Worst Free Agency Signings:
2040 181 Suns (kingalex) Sign PG John Crotty for $24,749,172 over 3 years.
I can kind of understand this contract. Crotty played decently well for the Suns last season, averaging 11,3, 8, 1 steal, and 2 TO’s in 31 minutes. Wanting to resign you’re players is what GM’s do. At least year’s LLE contract those numbers were alright. However, through a six game SIM, Crotty is averaging 11, 3, 8,1 steal, and 2 TO’s in 31 minutes, look familiar (I was being generous and rounding the numbers up)? Except now Crotty makes more than six times what he made last year. By comparison, Xavier Simpson is making $1.5 million less than Crotty over the course of his four year deal than Crotty’s three year deal. Simpson is averaging 8, 3, 6, 1.7 steals, and .5 TO’s (yes thats half a TO) in 18 minutes.
2040 181 Suns (kingalex) Sign C Rik Smits for $51,721,500 over 4 years.
Suns have the misfortune of being on this list twice. Overpaying for John Crotty and now overpaying for Rik Smits. Yes Smits has good ratings but more than $12 million per over the couse of 4 years for the perennial “one year, $8 million contract” and backup that is Rik Smits is dubious. Who knows, Smits could have been worth the contract, but this was surprising even before Sam Bowie got his contract at nearly $3 million less per year over the course of the contract. Suns are lucky to have gotten out of this contract, but the next team on the list isn’t so lucky.
2040 182 Nets (LakersGM1) Sign SF Dominique Wilkins for $80,000,000 over 5 years.
Nique lucked out and is now under contract til he’s 37. At $16 million per year this contract just looks ugly. Nique has been worth this is in the past but at 33 I’d be shocked if anyone was offering near this much. Nets could be banking on retiring mid contract but that’s a bit of a gamble, you don’t see it very often outside of Earl Monroe. But LakersGM is from Vegas, which means he is a gambling man by default. But having Nique and Smits abysmal contracts along with max deals of Gary Payton and Patrick Ewing don’t bode well for Nets future HC issues.
Surprise! Mid-article I decided to rank the top max contracts that were signed this offseason, however this still does not include any resignings or players resigning with their bird teams, so Patrick and Hakeem aren't listed.
Top Max Contracts of Free Agency:
4. 2040 181 Knicks (super) Sign SG Michael Porter for $63,250,000 over 4 years.
The SuperMaors come in at fourth because this signing wasn’t as much of a need as the others on the list. Super was quoted as saying “excited for the salt after I sign two maxes” and “all I need is a wing and big man” two needs that were certainly met this FA but the versatility of Jalen Rose and the birds of like Hairston mean that anyone could’ve fit for Super’s team. A maxed Ewing or Olajuwon would’ve proved just as useful, but Super again got lucky with arguably the best rookie FA available forgoing a five year max from the Magic to pair up with his +1 jump in lotto to snag Kevin Garnett.
3. 2040 181 Rockets (mrclubz) Sign SG Davon Dillard for $88,550,000 over 4 years.
This is a match made in heaven if I’ve ever seen one. Clubz and the Rockets weren’t in need of a certain position so much as the need for a scorer and boy did they get one. A max for Davon Dillard and through six games and numerous preseason showings are proving his worth of the max. Last year Rockets also swung at the fences signing, then 29 year olds Chris Mullin and Admon Gilder to large deals. Both now 30 are on different teams, and Dillard is proving exponentially more useful than Gilder and Mullin combined. Sure both can score, but Dillard is much more of a proficient scorer and actually plays defense as opposed to the C+ and C from Mullin and Gilder. Big signing but worth every penny. Only downside is that Dillard is a fresh 10 year vet, which means his max is more than $12.5 million more than a nine year vet. But similar to Super, the specific positional need wasn't there so that bumps this signing out of the top 2, but the need for a scorer ranks them above 4.
2. 2040 181 Lakers (blueblaze) Sign PG Joe Dumars for $75,900,000 over 4 years.
After a huge gamble during the draft, Blue and the Lakers struck gold in Day 1 of FA landing one of the top two, actually only two (at the time) real starting PG’s in Free Agency. After passing on Milos the Serbian in the draft and Rod Strickland long since departed, the Lakers void at PG was immense. Luckily for the Lakers, Joe Dumars was a nine year veteran so his max isn’t as much as Dillard’s. Arguably playing the best ball of is career, Joe Dumars, like Davon Dillard is showing his worth as a max contract player.
1. 2040 181 Bulls (bloop) Sign SF Javone Bess for $63,250,000 over 4 years.
And not surprising the best max signing of FA goes to the Bulls. Javone Bess all but seals an impressive two year rebuild for the Bulls. In those two years Bulls acquired Marcus Camby (5th Overall) and Chauncey Billups (4th Overall) to pair up with Eddie Jones and Chris Webber. One need remained and that was SF. The Bulls struck gold signing arguably the best available rookie FA and killed two birds with one stone and filling that need at SF. Since acquiring the Bulls in 2009 Bloop and the Bulls have had only two sub .500/losing seasons (which were these past two seasons) and in those two season they drafted Camby and Billups. This young core looks to be sticking together for a while, which could prove fruitful for the six-time NBADSL Champion Bloop and unfortunately doesn’t bode well for the rest of the league.
